Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

The 16-year-old accused of shooting a former police dog as the teen tried to burglarize a state trooper’s home was wearing an electronic ankle monitor that was placed on him less than a week before, according to a probable cause affidavit released Monday.

The German shepherd that was shot at least four times during the Nov. 18 burglary was put to sleep Friday evening after being flown to Gainesville for additional surgery.

Three people were believed to have taken part in the burglary but as of Monday evening, only one suspect, a juvenile, has been arrested. He is a 16-year-old Royal Palm Beach High student. The Palm Beach Post has not released his name because he is a juvenile and has not been charged as an adult in the case.

According to the affidavit, the teen suspect was on probation for a previous crime. He was arrested for allegedly burglarizing a home on Oct. 25. He was released from the Juvenile Assessment Center and fitted with an electronic ankle monitor on Nov. 13.

Less than a week later, the ankle monitor’s GPS showed that the teen was at broken-in home the day of the burglary, according to the affidavit.

The teen told police that he and two others targeted Florida Highway Patrol trooper Bobby Boody’s suburban West Palm Beach home with the hopes of leaving with guns and money. Boody was at work when the teens ransacked his home. It’s unclear what, if anything, was taken.

When asked Monday how the ankle monitoring system works, the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, in an email, explained that the monitors provide 24-hour tracking of a youth’s location and alert officials when a youth violates his home detention schedule.

It’s unclear what the suspect’s schedule was.

DJJ said that when a monitor alert is triggered, the monitoring company (in this case 3M), calls the youth “to resolve the violation.” The Post called 3M on Monday and was asked to call back Tuesday.

“DJJ is looking further into this matter to determine whether all appropriate steps were taken,” said Samadhi Jones, Deputy Communications Director for DJJ, in the email.

The affidavit obtained by the Post detailed how the suspects likely entered Boody’s house through a bedroom window and exited through a rear sliding glass door. The suspects likely fired six bullets into the hurricane-proof door to try to enter.

The report describes how Boody returned home from work about 10 p.m. that Sunday. He entered through his garage and found that his home was “ransacked.”

After finding some of his belongings on the floor, he searched for his 5-year-old German shepherd, Drake, who he found beside his bed lying down suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Drake was transferred the next day to a veterinary clinic in suburban Lake Worth where he underwent hours of surgery. Friday he was flown to doctors in Gainesville for further treatment. Drake eventually had to be euthanized.

According to the report, blood splatter was found in the kitchen, family room, one bedroom and the master bathroom.

Bullet fragments and projectiles were found on the floor, walls and furniture in the family room, on the floor of the living room, in the master bedroom and in the master bathroom closet.

Neighbors told deputies they saw a male riding a bike up and down the street in front of Boody’s home. Another neighbor said he called the sheriff’s office after he saw two men climbing over a wall into Boody’s neighborhood and later heard six gunshots. He then saw them climb back over the wall, the affidavit says.

The teen suspect also was on probation after being arrested for drug possession on Nov. 9.

I have a few suggestions for this young man. One of them is gonads in a vise!
Peter.

I love dogs myself, but I find it more than interesting that a man who has extreme difficulty with someone killing someone who is beating the hell out of him proceeds to advocates torture when a dog is shot. cuckoo

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

A pick handle more likely and be done with the bastard. He must be thicker than pig-shit, to go breaking and entering with a tracking device.

Nothing but trouble down the road for him. After that it will end badly, for him that is.
