My trip to the farm land of Argentina gave me the urge to get some chickens again. There are two problems: Subdivision rules....oh well, no roosters. Two Jack Russells. Now little Bill is getting on in years and he might be easier to convince that these new chickens will be members of the family. Punkin thinks that anything that walks, flys, crawls, or climbs is fair game. That will be the tough one. Any ideas on how to chicken proof my dogs...? Maybe if I agree to share the eggs? You probably won't be able to train them to accept your poultry. It is much easier to start with an 8 week old puppy and a broody hen protecting her chicks. For any dog you'd need to emphasize the fact the birds are part of things on a daily basis, be firm on correction and depending on the dogs' personality, work on this for a couple of years. Russells tend to be very hard headed, I had one before and he never let up. You could very well be successful with your dogs, hard to say, but I wouldn't leave them out with poultry with out supervision. That said, I've seen lots of pit bulls who do very well as chicken guardians. My labrador lives 24/7 with my birds and pigs. I have roughly 100 chickens with some ducks and turkeys mixed in. She was raised from a pup around the birds. ~Ann | |||
