Came home from work yesterday, my buddy Andy, a black Lab, was dead in his kennel. Would have been 9 years old in 3 weeks. No explanation, everything has been normal. Went snipe hunting 2 weeks ago, he did great. It was a shocker. My wife and I could hardly speak or sleep. This was my fourth Lab, spanning 20+ years. I'm 56, don't know if I can do it again. Time will tell. Knew you fellows would understand. Thanks, Steve

My condolences,,,,Sorry to hear it. If you can muster up the strength, a new little one can do wonders to help with the grieving.

You're still young enough to enjoy another hunting partner and I'm sure there is another little guy out there that would like to do a little snipe hunting.

Peace,

HL

Aw SH$T, Man! Sooo sorry to hear of your loss. Never easy ... especially with no known cause.

My most sincere condolences.

Within a year of being early retired, I lost my two friends a year apart. They each passed from cancer at about age 14. That's a good age for big dogs ... but that didn't make it easier.

My wife hasn't allowed me to bring another home. She simply isn't able to do it again. I personally buy into the idea that there are too many puppy babies out there that need someone to care. They enrichen us as much or more than we give them. Would be a terrible shame to lose that kinda friendship.

Will take some time to remember the better times in preference to the immediate loss. Hang in there ... and open your heart to a new kid.

Mike

Sorry to hear that, certainly not a old timer quite yet. No consolation and certainly too early but perhaps a better way to go than dragging on only to get the needle in the end.

Hello,I'm new to this forum, but not other forums, being a dog lover,I feel the pain you must feel, and my condolences to you and your family .....
I have been down this same road so many times, and I have one 13 year old lab that is starting to fail,so I'm afraid I'll travel this road again soon....

But,after thinking this thru, and looking at what I have done,I'd do it again in a heartbeat....my dogs are all rescues, labs that nobody else wanted for one reason or another, the three I have now fill my heart with joy ,laughter and I enjoy their company all the time ....where would they be if I had not adopted them.....we'll never know....but I have given the last five rescues the best I have to offer, and they don't complain one bit ....so somewhere down the road, you may see or hear about a dog that is great, but for reasons unknown the dog may need a home.....puppies are wonderfull, but a lot of work ,adult dogs generally come trained ,and with a big heart ....they just need to find someone with a big heart also....BB34

Well said BB34. Every dog and cat I have owned in the past 33years has been a rescue. Sure I could go out and purchase a pet, but I always felt the need to give a second chance to someone's castaway, abused, or forgotten pet. They have all been good pets!

Steve, my heart goes out to you and yours! It is never easy to lose our loyal companions. I remember that empty feeling all to well. It took me two years since my last dog had to be put down, before I looked for a new little buddy. We rescued an older pup who had some major issues. We stuck it out and gave him lots of love and training. He has turned out to be a great addition to our family.

Best way to heal that aching heart is a wagging tail, puppy breath and big brown eyes, when you and your wife feel ready.

Kindest Regards,
Mary

Do Dogs Go To Heaven?

An old man and his dog were walking down this dirt road with fences on both sides, they came to a gate in the fence and looked in, it was nice - grassy, woody areas, just what a 'huntin' dog and man would like, but, it had a sign saying 'no trespassing' so< they walked on.
They came to a beautiful gate with a person in white robes standing there. "Welcome to Heaven" he said. The old man was happy and started in with his dog following him.
The gatekeeper stopped him. "Dogs aren't allowed, I'm sorry but he can't come with you." "What kind of Heaven won't allow dogs? If He can't come in, then I will stay out with him. He's been my faithful companion all his life, I can't desert him now. " "Suit yourself, but I have to warn you, the Devil's on this road and he'll try to sweet talk you into his area, he'll promise you anything, but, the dog can't go there either. If you won't leave the dog, you'll spend Eternity on this road " So the old man and dog went on.
They came to a rundown fence with a gap in it, no gate, just a hole. Another old man was inside. "Scuse me Sir, my dog and I are getting mighty tired, mind if we come in and sit in the shade for awhile?" "Of course, there's some cold water under that tree over there. Make yourselves comfortable " "You're sure my dog can come in? The man down the road said dogs weren't allowed anywhere." "Would you come in if you had to leave the dog?" " No sir, that's why I didn't go to Heaven, he said the dog couldn't come in. We'll be spending Eternity on this road, and a glass of cold water and some shade would be mighty fine right about now. But, I won't come in if my buddy here can't come too, and that's final. "
The man smiled a big smile and said "Welcome to Heaven." "You mean this is Heaven? Dogs ARE allowed? How come that fellow down the road said they weren't?" "That was the Devil and he gets all the people who are willing to give up a life long companion for a comfortable place to stay. They soon find out their mistake, but, then it's too late. The dogs come here, the fickle people stay there. GOD wouldn't allow dogs to be banned from Heaven. After all, HE created them to be man's companions in life, why would he separate them in death?"

THE CURATE THINKS YOU HAVE NO SOUL
The curate thinks you have no soul;
I know that he has none. But you,
Dear friend, whose solemn self-control,
In our foursquare familiar pew,
Was pattern to my youth -- whose bark
Called me in summer dawns to rove --
Have you gone down into the dark
Where none is welcome -- none may love?
I will not think those good brown eyes
Have spent their life of truth so soon;
But in some canine paradise
Your wraith, I know, rebukes the moon,
And quarters every plain and hill,
Seeking his master... As for me,
This prayer at least the gods fulfill;
That when I pass the flood and see
Old Charon by the Stygian coast
Take toll of all the shades who land,
Your little, faithful, barking ghost
May leap to lick my phantom hand.

My condolences. We had a mixed breed, now its called a Labradoodle named Queenie. It's been 6 years and we still cry. We adopted a 6yr. old Border Collie named Elroy about a year before Queenie died(she had bone cancer). Then we were given a Border Collie puppy for Christmas and named her Bella. They go great together.

My condolences. I'm currently on my 3rd Lab (hence my handle) and I certainly know what it is like to lose a hunting buddy. If you haven't had a hunting dog/partner it's hard for people to understand the special bond that develops with your dog. I normally hang out on the African forum but just decided to check in here and couldn't myself. I had to offer my condolences.

Labman, I can certainly understand your loss. I had to put my friend "Rue" down June 29th. She was a dog of unending devotion to her master. She was losing weight ,so I took her to the Vet for a looksee. He recommended worming, that being accomplished she got a little better but not fully. Back to the Vet for more test, finally settling on Diabetes. Two shots a day a.m/P.m her weight coming back slowly. The final blow coming later. Total blindness, and the unability to get up by herself. I thought that I would do her a final favor...although it hurt. A tough choice. She was ten. Dennis Mc

wboggs, nice post. There was an episode of Outer Limits I think, where they told your first story, except they decided that dogs were not allowed in the first gate because they would smell the sulphur (of Hell)!

Steve,

I'm sorry for your loss......it's amazing how they become such a big part of the family. My black lab is almost 14 and I know he doesn't have much more time left with us. It's hard to think about not having him around. I hope he decides to go when he is ready, because I hate the thought of having to put him down. He is my third lab and I told my wife tonight that I would always have one around......it is just part of who I am.

Hang in there

The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge
because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a
land of meadows, hills, and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and
water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again.
Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.
There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who
loved them on Earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when
one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up!
The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group!
You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or
her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again,
and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together never again to be separated.

Steve, sorry about your loss. It is hard to handle when you care so much about them. I lost both of mine (GSP & Wemi) within a week recently. At 56 you are not too old in my book. I look at the life span of the dog and just want to be reasonably certain I won't be leaving one homeless when I go. BB34's suggestion about rescue dogs is very valid. I have had 2 Weimis and 2 GSPs that were rescue dogs in the last 20 years. All have been great with very few problems (once I discovered electric fences). Even a new pup should be a valid thought. Let time heal some of the pain and consider healing the rest with a new pal. They don't replace our old friends, only add to the pleasure of life. I'm 61 and my favorite rescue lady has a 2yr old Weimi waiting for when I am ready.
