I'm thinking about purchassing one of these with 2 collars. Looks to be fairly simple to use. Anyone out there with good or bad comments?

Thanks in advance!

I haven't used them myself but know of some houndsmen that have, they promptly returned them to the store, they where not happy at all.
Garmin Asto is the only way to go as far as tracking devices.

Thanks Doug. What I like about the SportDOG is that it is 3 in 1. The screen looks pretty simple. I have heard that Garmin is coming out with one soon. Don't know what the cost will be but am more concerned about a Garmin being too complicated for me. I read a review (ad?) in Sporting Classics. It said that the SportDOG TEK 1.0 is for the guy who simply wants to know "where's my dog?"

Thanks Zephyr

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Astro is solely a GPS tracking collar. I'm looking for a simple all in one.

Regards

anything sportdog I have ever used was JUNK......

Buy the garmin, they have actually now aquired tritronics, which is by far the best shock collar company, so surely a combo collar is in the works.

Garmin customer service is top notch.

That said I hunted with hounds watch my freinds use the garmin trackers.

They seem to work the trouble with them when they should be listening to the hounds they are watching the little screen.

But if they are working well it is nice to knowhow far way they are when they stop barking.

Just received the collar on Saturday. Pretty simple and appears fairly well made. Easy to see screen. Have used it on the dog when let out of the kennel. I'll be testing it fully on my big running English Setter later this week while hunting ditch parrots. Big Grin More later.

OK, I used the SportDOG TEK 1.0 two days this week while pheasant hunting. I found it to be very cool and simple to use. Several times it vibrated and showed how far and in what direction my dog was on point. One time she was 214 yards away. In the past, I would have been blowing my whistle or sending tone while having no clue where she was or what she was doing. Now I know what's going on, how far away and in what direction. Smiler

Pheasant hunting with a dog which is 214 yards away? Must be pen-raised pheasant going for a walk about.

Yes Norseman, they are pen raised pheasants hunted on a 300 acre private hunting lodge with natural cover. We on the east coast of the US are not so fortunate to have wild birds. I make no appologies for this! This statement of fact should have no impact on my report of the SportDOG collar. Wink

Sorry to hear that,
I would of thought that they could be released to go WILD in Virginia.

VDGIF attempted it in the late 60's. It was not successful. Thus, we must deal with the hand we are dealt. BTW, I am traveling up to a Pennsylvania hunting lodge.

I ran 3 Sport Dog GPS collars (no e-collar) on my deer dogs in Ga all season. The Sport Dog is simple to use and keeps a lock as good as the garmin...about 900 yds in thick southern bottom land. It helped me locate my dogs quick after the drives and i really didn't miss the maps. I seemed to have lees trouble getting it going than teh Garmin fellas. They were always messing around with theirs. Sport Dog is a simple, solid product!

SportDog Tek 1.0 has alot of problems that need worked out. They put it on the market without thorough testing.

If you wait a few more months the Garmin/Tri Tronics will be out and I guarantee it will blow the Sportdog out of the water.

Just exchanged emails with the folks @ Garmin & they state that they have no plans to make a combo tracking & E-collar combo at this time so I should not keep holding my breath.

Garmin has bought Tri Tronics so I'm sure some thing is in the works soon. I am running a tri tronics e-collar unit on my astro collar but it is two different hand helds but need the e-portion of the set up very very seldom. I'm very happy with the Garmin I've taken it swimming still with me I've worked hard to get it into the thickest soft woods and it still sends and receives my only complaint is that it is a bit menu intensive,,,,

First read my above post then try this after the statement from Garmin that they were " NOT " working on a track & train combo collar they today announced that they have one for sale.

Looks like a good unit, it can run up to 20 dogs for the guys that need that many to tree a bear or flush a covey! the e-collar only works on 3 dogs at a time. I won't be changing from the DC30-or 40's anytime soon. Using both Garmin and tritronics at the same time has save more then one dog from the teeth of a cougar.
