Yes but still hard to find ones that aren't just from show quality. Pointing dog journal has a list of setter breeders in their classified section. I have a friend whoo has a red and white setter who is a bird maniac.

Search the Red Setter Club of America. I have one coming from Wash. Judged a trial where the female just ran away with the win, I was amazed! Fabulous dog! There were several other's there but they hadn't received the training of that female. Get on Gun Dog Forum and search "Red Delicious". Craig O'Brien from Wash.

I am a big fan of the Red setter, and have seen a few nice Irish setters. I believe the Irish I saw were outcrossed but they looked like the original dog before the show circuit got hold of them. Check the ads in Gun Dog magazine, there are usually some advertised.

I have a Red Setter coming before to much longer. Judged a Shooting Dog stake in Sunnyside, Wash and watched a female absolutely cream the field. Also a really nice male and they will be bred soon as the female come's in season.

They are out there and they will give any setter a run for the money!

Good hunting Irish / Red setters are not hard to find. That's just hogwash. I've trained several for customers over the past 10 years. The field red setters range between 35-55 lbs, generally have slighter coats, are extremely smart and train easily. Buy any good gun dog magazine and you can find several listing for field red setters. Celtic Kennels come to mind, but there are many more.

I have friends, Rupert and Eunice Colmore from Duck River, TN, that at last count owned 19 field Irish Setters. I have hunted over them, and they are outstanding and classy hunters.

The only downside I see to the red setter is that they can be hard to spot in the quail fields and grouse woods here in the southeast. Much easier to see a Gordon or English.

That's what they make bells for.

I'm not a fan of bells, especially when hunting pheasants and grouse. I find bells on dogs when grouse hunting spooked the birds prematurely.
