My wife Karen had been begging me to get a dog, but there was 8 neighborhood dogs running around and I didn't feel any need to add to the pack. All very good dogs belonging to friends and family. Due to various reasons the pack got reduced to 4 and I gave in. She wanted a rat terrier and I wanted a jack russel. As luck would have it, we found a cross of the two terriers. There was only three puppies left and when Karen talked to them, only one perked up her ears and looked at Karen. The connection was made. Karen put her on the ground and called her and she came straight to her new owner. Penny was catching on quickly to getting house trained, with the help of the kids. She found a friend in Molly, a weinnerdog/beagle cross. Unfortunately, Penny had an interest in 4-wheelers. Karen was gonna take the atv over to one of the neighbor's house. She looked for Penny around the tires while calling for her. All she can figure is that Penny was always on the other side of the tires where she couldn't see her. Guessing that she ran off to play with Molly, she felt it safe. You know, when someone else accidentally runs over your pet, it hurts, but not nearly as bad as when you do it. The other bad thing is, I was out of town and couldn't be there for Karen. The kids are 9 and 6. I'm sure you can guess their reaction to the loss of their first pet. We have both agreed that we will never name another pet after something you see almost everyday.
Here's a pic of her in my son's cap 3 days before she died.

This is heartbreaking. Can't imagine a worse experience for a dog owner. My condolences to you and your family, especially your wife.
