I have one 300 RUM that prefers Retumbo. My Savage LM loves it; it is as accurate as my Stiller Edge.

This thread got me thinking about my 338/300RUM again, so I got it out to work on. I put a more substantial brake on it and a rail at the front. I mounted an atras bipod and a new vortex that I recently did a review on. I loaded up more rounds with 860 to try. Groups were improved off the bipod and it's much less punishing to shoot with the brake. I still couldn't get nice consistent velocity though. I tried a couple different primers and seating depths. Anyone have ideas on how to use this powder?

Anyway, I changed to retumbo and had some nice results. I was getting 2725fps with 92.5gr, rem 9.5, and 300gr smk. Three of these went into about half an inch at 200 yards, which I was pretty pleased with. More powder seemed to make the velocities get more erratic, so I guess I'll load a bunch at 92.5 to play with at long range.

What were your extreme spreads? I have been able to get more velocity with Retumbo and RL-33, but neither would match the low ES of H-1000.

The 3 rounds at 92.5gr were 2722, 2726 and 2723. The worst was 860, mag primers and a 0.080" jump--that was easily 60fps spread. Putting the bullet at the lands, with mag primers, and a little less powder seemed to help some. It would be nice to get 860 working because it's so cheap and too slow for most things, but at least I have a load figured out with retumbo.

At this early stage, I'm pretty sold on Retumbo.

A bit over 3000fps, ES under 14fps for a dozen rounds, SD was 11, iirc.

My Edge is a Bat actioned Canyon Rifle build
By Defensive Edge. It's sitting at 2000 rounds and
The throat hasn't budged yet. Constrast that to
my .300 RUM that died at 600 rounds.

91 grains of H1000 was my load until the brass started getting hard to
Find, then I reduced it to 90 to
Save the primer pockets. With the Rempel tool they last forever now.

My Edge is throated for 300 grain Bergers on the lands. RL33 has been terrific for me. Better accuracy and velocity than H1000 in my gun.

I went with RL33 in my newest Lapua. I am keeping track of the velocity of every shot with all my LR guns; be interesting to see any velocity deviation this winter; it doesn't get that cold, but I will see 50 degree temp drops.
