IMO, more importantly is what's your optic?

Do you understand the application and adaptation of the mil-ranging formula for both downrange zeroing and rangefinding with any multi-stadia reticle or turret?

Do you understand the ~inversely proportional relationship between reticle subtension (angular measurement) vs. magnification, and how it can be applied to downrange zeroing and rangefinding?

I have seen the simple plex reticle itself applied for both RR'ing and DZ'ing very effectively to ~500 yds. or so, sometimes even farther.

A number of years ago Mike Dowd won the Steel Safari several times using a custom 6-284 and Leupold with Duplex reticle set up to maximize point blank range on a 12" steel diamond-shaped tgt. (i guess the target at the time), beating all the sniper teams using mil-reticles and 308 rifles.

Understanding the math behind the reticle/turret systems for long-range shooting is a BIG bonus when it comes to making 1st shot connections downrange.

IMO the best place to learn these concepts is with a simple SFP plex-reticled scope in a hunting gun or even 22 rimfire.

Find a place to shoot longer ranges and practice shooting + calcs. in different conditions, and make simple steel tgts. like this if your local range deosn't have anything--
