Leupold CDS Elevation Dial Question

I have a Leupold VX3 I 4x14.5x40 CDS Scope. I currently have a CDS Dial for my 264 Mag set for a 100yrds at 3000ft. The gun was sighted in at 1440ft elevation. I orderd a new CDS Dial for the same load but for 8000ft Elevation for my next hunt. I will be practicing at the range at 1440ft elevation. When I switch to the new dial how much difference is my sight in going to be at 100 yards?

What does a ballistic app say is the difference for the two different elevations? That's how Leupold decides what to put onto a CDS.

Changing the dial won't change your zero. What will change is the come-ups in the new dial for a given distance.

If you give me the bullet you are using and the velocity, I can give you a rough idea. I assume you are looking for the difference in 100 yard POI when sighted in for say 300 yds?

So if the gun is sighted in at 100yds (dial set on 1) at 1440 ft with the 3000ft dial and I swapped the dial (still at 1440ft)to the 8000ft dial and set that (Dial to 1)it will be dead on at 100 yards at 7000ft?

It seems to me I would have to be at 7000ft when sighting in the rifle at 100yds for the dial to be correct at say 600yds at 7000ft?

I ran the elevation in an app between 1440ft and 7000ft with a cartridge that was already in the app and the difference was .1 at 100yards at 600 yards it was 60.8 clicks at 1440 yards and 62 clicks at 7000ft. Does that sound correct?

I just talked to Leupold's Custom Shop. They said put the original M.O.A. dial on. When I get to the Hunting area at 7000ft shoot at 100yds and adjust if necessary then put on the 7000ft dial.

If you really want to do it right, sight in at 600. Loosen the set screws and spin the dial until it reads 600 and lock it down. Accumulated error from zeroing at 100, chronograph error, BC error, temperature adjustments, altitude adjustments etc can easily add up to a MOA elevation error from the chart and at 600 that's starting to be a big deal so cancelling it is a good thing.

If you move that 1 MOA error back to 100 it doesn't mean anything.

Thanks, Usually I sight in for a 100yds then shoot at 300yds to fine tune.

Yes. When i guessed as to what your parameters I only came up with a .1 difference at 100 yds.

Good advice; it is what I do esp when using a BDC type reticle.
