I'd like to take a trail camera along for my next Africa hunt. What camera, under $400, 5 megapixels or better, infrared capable, weather-resistant, instant trigger camera should I get? I'd appreciate recommendations.

One of my friends is bringing one - I think from Cuddleback - to tanzania in two weeks time.

I will tell you how it goes when we come back three weeks later.

Saeed,
What was the verdict? I'm looking to buy a IR trail camera and I'm on the fence between a couple of different models. The Cuddeback seems like the best bet, but I'd like to hear some reviews of real world experience.

Very disappointing really, as the camera worked intermitently first, then packed up completely.

I have a stealth cam I'm not sure of the correct modle as it is not with at the moment but at the camp.

It is not high in megapixel but takes good enough photos batteries last long, quality of photos is great. The only downside is that it is very sensitive if leaves russle it takeas a photo s you have to set it p to shoot the photos away from any vegtation that could move regurlaly.

Or set the timer every 5 minutes to take tw pres after each other. It has spent quite a bit maybe not so much time outside but enoughto be tested and I cannot find any fault with it.

Maybe you should have a look into their range.

As you can see the camera was quite a bit away but still did an excellent job.

I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

I'm about ready to buy three Moultrie 6.0 Megapixels infrared Gamespy trail cameras for my trip to Namibia next month. I have no experience with it but I decided on that particular model because of the infrared flash, 4GB capability, and 6.0 megapixel resolution. Also, I'm attaching a solar battery recharger to one of them.

Does anyone have any experience with the Moultrie 6.0 infrared?

I'll post some pictures when I get back in late March and let you all know it performed.

Safari-Hunt:

I noticed that your pics were in color. I take it that your trail cam uses white light flash and is not infrared, or is it?

Yes, you can set it so you use infrared but since the animals don't mind the flash why loose picture quality.

Sounds like you have quite a setup there is no chance that your luggage would get lost in Joburg somewehere rotflmo

Safari-Hunt:

You never said what make and model trail cam you have. What distance from camera to genet were those shots taken?

All of my photo gear will be carried in carry-ons, split up between me, my son, and a buddy. I hope that nothing happens to those luggages.

namibiahunter,

The brand is StealthCam the product number I have no clue like I said before the cam is not with me at present.

The camera was about 10 yards from the genet tied to another mopane tree. He came back night after night and I have lot of photos of him thumb

When I travel by plane I always carry my camera and video stuff as hand/carry on luggage and never had a problem so far. Was just joking about the loosing luggage part. Since I'm only 40 minutes away from the airport. thumb

Here's a follow-up to what I bought. I checked a lot of places and read a lot of reviews. I ended up buying a Moultrie 6.0IR. They seemed to consistently have the best reviews from all the sources.
Pro's: Cheaper cost, simple instructions, time/date/temperature/moon phase and barometric stamp on photo's, laser aimer, built-in viewer, 3 modes of resolution, adjustable delay, upgradeable software, 50 ft IR flash range, SD storage cards (4GB max), patch cord for viewing images on a TV, patch cord for downloading to a computer, solar charger option (when used with rechargeable batteries).

Con's: The case feels somewhat cheap and the mounting tabs feel a little flimsy, larger than some other brands

I strapped it to a tree out near the pond in my pasture, so I'll see how well it works over the next few days, capturing whatever walks by (probably my dog and our ducks).

I'll update with my experience, once I start getting some images.

Yes, please do. I'm taking 3 Moultrie 6.0IRs to Namibia in 20 days and I'm anxious to see how yours works.
