Anyone know of a cheap..say less than 1 grand.. camera that will burst record at 500-1000 frames/sec. ? It would appear that as soon as you get away from normal video rates the price goes thru the roof.

I posted a thread about the GoPro video cameras. There are lots of slow motion shots, but they are done with software in post-processing, and a whole lot cheaper than a real 1000 fps HD video camera, including the software. You would have to learn how to use fairly complicated software however.

There are many cameras (including the GoPro) that can record at high frame rates. but what you gain in frame rates you loose in resolution. The only way you get real nice HD high frame rate is to pay the big bucks.

you can do some pretty smooth slow motion, like Wink mentioned, in post production. I use Twixtor myself and depending on what you are shooting it can turn out pretty good. here is an example I did when just testing some camera and twixtor settings.

you can sometimes see a blur around the edges of objects. its a decent tradeoff, unless you want to drop 50-100k on a phantom and get the real good stuff Smiler
