I'm thinking about buying a new digital slr, but have been so faithful to film that I haven't been keeping up. I'm thinking about a Nikon D300 with a Nikkor 17-55mm lens. Is there anything better in that price range?

Great camera. (I know the Cannon brigade will disagree)
You will wonder how you ever got on with film.

If you do much editing of your pics, you'll want a pretty god computer as well.

I'm from the Canon brigade,and;

Nikon is a good choice;

Once you go digital,you will never regret it!

If you goto Saeed's sticky thread on gear reviews,click on Fred Miranda forums...

Excellent info there on Nikon forum;

Lenses for digital are everything;

If you like to shoot low light/indoors;you may wish to buy a IS lense.Well worth the $.

I'm sure Saeed will comment,he's a nikon shooter.

Don't know which lens that 17 to 55 is.
but
I wasn't too impressed with any of the kit lenses for the SLRs.
So it's still down to getting 2 or 3 good ones at least.

If you can, try a top spec non SLR digital.

Some are so good you hardly need an SLR, considering the cost and hassle of a SLR system.

like these...

Actually, it has become a sort of toss up between Canon and Nikon right now.

I do prefer Nikon because I find their controlls much easier to use.

And if video cams are anything to go by, Canon is learning that people do prefer a different layout, and their new video cameras reflect that.

I have been using the D300 for quite some time, and love it.

I have also started using VR lenses exclusively. That vibrartion reduction sure gives you and edge on marginal photos.

It seems the Canon G10 will be on the shelves in one month. It's probably worth the wait for someone who is considering the G9, since it seems to have more of everything.

If a compact is eanough camera for you.
It sure is cheaper and eraser to carry around.

I like my Lumix FZ 18 but there is no remote flash facility, and it has no reference for when the lens is set at exactly "50mm" or whatever. The display only seems to give a magnification readout.
But most cameras seem like that.
As an auto camera it's great, but not much use as a manual.

I have been using the Nikon D300 SLR for the past few months, and I absolutely LOVE it.

If you decide to buy it, make sure you only by Nikon VR lenses.

I have been using two quite extensively.

The 18-200 VR and the 70-300 VR.

You will need a large and fast CF card for best results.

I ended up buying the Nikon D90 for my first foot in the digital water pool. It came with the El Cheapo 18-105mm lens. I'll let you know what I think, this will be new to me, but I'm looking forward to shooting everything I see and then spending a lot of time on the computer futzing with the pics. I'm especially interested in seeing how all my old Nikon lenses work with it. I've got a Nikon 300mm (which I guess will be like a 500mm on this thing) which ought to be great for animal photography.

As explained to me by a pro - while the older Nikon film type lenses will mechanically fit the digital cameras ,there will be some problems on the edges.Especially the wider angle ones .The edges may have focus or pixelating problems.

I'll try some comparisons with the 18-105 DX lens that came with the camera at settings with equivalent focal lengths to my 20mm, 35mm, 55mm and 105mm old fixed focal length lenses and see if this issue comes up. I'll probably never know what "pixelating" means.

Just make sure nothing hits anything inside with the 20mm lens.

I took delivery on my new Nikon D90 with the 18-105 mm ED G VR lens and put it through its first rigourous test, a candid portrait of my wife. Over the years I have taken a lot of candid portraits of my wife with my F3 and a Metz CT45 or my F100 with the SB24. Time for the digital test, with the on-camera flash.

So, I take a shot and..instant gratification, there it is, perfectly exposed, on the huge Live Screen image back on the camera, which I showed to her. "It makes me look 80 years old, you will delete it immediately. I hope you didn't pay alot for that camera."

Thus concludes my initial testing but I will try out other lens combinations before making a final decision on this outfit.

I have quite a few pics of THE HAND.
No matter how quick I am she can get that hand in front of her face. I'll rig up a trail cam one day.
Most cameras like most guns cost about $50. Wink
