I have been looking at compact point and shoot digital's. I will be using this camera for hunting and fishing pics, and would like to use it to get some better gun pics. I have been looking at the Sony Rx100 series, particularly the 3, don't need the enhanced video capabilities of the 4. Any thoughts from the resident experts? I really have no interest in becoming a photographer, just want to take some nice outdoor pics. Will also be taking it to Zim in September on safari with the Duckworth clan.

I am using the SONY RX 100 IV right now in an underwater housing in the Maldives.

I have taken quite a bit of 4K video with it, and the quality is absolutely fantastic.

Pictures are fantastic too.

But, if I may suggest, for a safari I prefer to have a bigger zoom than this camera has.

Also, at least this particular example does not seem to be very reliable.

It shuts down all by itself every now and then while filming.

Sometime it turns itself on without anyone touching it!!

I also made a great discovery, at least for underwater photography.

I take 4K video, and then extract the right frame I wish to have as a picture.

The results are fantastic.

I will post some photos when I get back next week.

Saeed, sounds like the camera works pretty good, I had an older compact that would do strange things when the battery got weak, one thing I read online was the 4 eats batteries while filming video

thank you for the report

Gale,

Sadly, I cannot recommend this camera, due to some reliability issues.

Photo and video quality is fantastic.

But, we had two cameras.

One was used for underwater video and photos in an underwater housing.

This one kept turning itself off, reports that battery is low - which wasn't, as turning it on works and shows full charge.

The other one will just turn itself on all by itself - without anyone touching it.

I was a bit skeptical at first, then made a point of putting it next to me, turn off - while doing some computer work.

Suddenly the lens would pop out, and the camera is ready for action.

Never had any of these problems with cameras before.

Pictures, and video quality in 4K is exceptionally good though.

In fact, the video quality was so good that I stopped using the camera for photos under water.

And just extract the photos from the video.

I will post a complete photo report once I have finished.

I picked up a like new Sony hx400v for $277, rather spend the money for a compact point and shoot I will try this one with more zoom and see how it works.
