I bought one almost a year ago, and love it. I teamed it up with the Tamron 18-200mm F3.5 - 6.3 Di II LD ASPHERICAL (IF) MACRO lens. This lens gives me the equivalent of a 28 - 320 35mm lens. I bought 2 memory cards for it also, a 2 gig, and a 4 gig. I'm set for life now. The 18-55mm lens they package with the camera kit isn't that hot, but it does work, and takes generally acceptable photos. I've found it to be a very versatile, yet simple to use camera, and I like the idea of being able to manually over ride the automatic settings if I want to. Some people have mentioned that they don't like the fact that you must use the view finder to take the photos. Since I was brought up on 35mm cameras, using the view finder is second nature to me. Some have also mentioned that they feel the buttons a too small. My hands are slightly larger than most people I know, and I have no trouble. Like anything new, it just takes a little while to get used to.

I bought one about a year ago and like it because it's fairly easy to use. I also like the fact that you can take fast pictures with it versus a point and shoot digital that has a delay. It's great for capturing action shots. You can also get a wide variety of lenses at a full range of costs.

I have a Elan7e with 28/135 USM/IS & 75/300 USM/IS lens now so the XT just seems like a natural fit. Doug Humbarger NRA Life member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club 72'73. Yankee Station Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

She's got it in New Zealand right now. You can see lots of photos taken with the Rebel XT and other Canon cameras at this forum: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php I have had a REbel XT since December, and love it. The kit lens is not the best, but good enough for taking pictures indoors or outdoors. Kit lenses usually are not as sharp as the ones from 18-70mm made my Sigma, Tamron, and a couple of others. These lenses cost a little more than the kit lenses, however. Since the LCD screen is not used for taking pictures with the XT, the battery lasts quite a long time. You won't notice any time delay from the moment you press the shutter button. You press the button half way, and the camera focuses on the subject. If you press the button all the way, it will rapidly focus and then take the picture without delay. You can also take burst photos if you want: the camera will rapidly take several photos in a burst. Other features -Full Auto: The camera does everything for you, including popping-up the built-in flash when needed. There is a beeper you can turn ON/OFF at will, that tells you that the lens has focused. There is also a light telling you the same in the viewfinder. These things happen almost instantly when you take the picture, since there is almost no time delay. -Portrait (the second of six auto modes): The camera automatically sets a wide aperture for less depth-of-field, which in turn blurs the background. Holding the shutter button down produces continuous shooting. -Landscape (#3 auto mode): The camera automatically selects a small aperture to maintain the entire scene in focus. -Close-Up (#4 auto mode): For taking close-up photos. -Sports (#5 auto mode): The camera freezes action by using a faster ISO. In this mode the camera automatically tracks and maintains the subject in focus as it moves towards you, or away from you. This is useful at race tracks, horse races, etc. If you hold the shutter button down, the camera will automatically focus and shoot a burst of five frames if you want. -Night Portrait (#6 auto mode): For taking pictures of people at night. The flash automatically pops-up. The flash automatically pops-up in four of the above modes. However, there is a flash button you can press to pop-up the flash any time you want. On top of the 6 basic modes (automatic modes), there are five more as follows: -P Program: The camera does everything for you, but you can change some of the features, white balance, focusing points, etc. if you want. The changes you make only affect that individual picture to be taken, not the next. -Tv Priority: This is a shutter priority mode. The shutter is locked in one position, and the camera changes the aperture automatically. But again, you can change any of the features at will. Shutter priority is useful when you want to either freeze the motion, or blur it (such as blurring moving water, etc.). -Av Aperture-Priority: The aperture is automatically selected by the camera, even if the light level changes. This mode is useful for landscapes where you want every subject to stay in focus. It's also good for close-ups. -M. Manual: In this mode you control every function of the camera. -A-Dep. Depth-Of-Field Priority: The camera evaluates all its focus points, and selects the aperture that will give enough depth-of-field to keep each subject under each focusing point in focus. The camera has 7 focus points, but you can delete any of the focus points at will, or put them back. You can do this with any of these 5 camera modes. ----There are also several custom functions you can taylor to your needs. For example, you can set the camera software filters to take black and white pictures if you like, and save the setting in memory. You can change anything you want to your liking, including the picture format (RAW, JPEG, or a combination of both). You can also change picture quality, or whatever you want. For example, you can set the XT to take a picture of a person at night (with flash), and only show the person. The background can be black, with in turn does not show other people or things behind the subject. The list is much longer, but I better stop here.
