While moose hunting in Alaska I had the opportunity to take some photos of grouse who offered to pose for me. Grouse is a game bird that's often hunted during moose season. The large and bright red lining above the eye indicates a male of the species. Used a Canon 7D and a 400mm L lens.

Beautiful. Excellent rendition you are getting with that lens and whatever post-processing you are doing. It works. I think you should post this in the Photo Albums section (or get one of the moderators to move it) since this practical photography section seems to get less traffic. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Thanks, Wink. In relation to processing, I shoot RAW and then process with CS6. Some of the effects, such as brightening the subject and darkening the edges is done with NIK's plugins. Now, the last photo didn't need much work. I just happened to be there at the right moment during the golden light of late afternoon. The vegetation is quite colorful at this time of the year, too.

Spruce grouse are beautiful. I only ever saw them in high alpine country in Montana. Great memories stalking elk up high. Very tasty as well. Great shots. The sharpness and colors are spot on. Jeremy

Thanks, Jeremy. These grouse are found all over the interior of Alaska at low and high altitude. I had a couple of them in my backyard a couple of days ago, but the ones in the photos were on the ATV trails during the moose season (a week or two ago). By the way, a show hunters in the interior of Alaska often enjoy during moose season (1-20 September), is the Auroras. Our campsite is on a ridge, so we have a clear view of the sky by just stepping a few feet from our tents:
