I made a request here several about 3 years back, asking which camera I should buy.
For one reason or another, I never did buy a camera (cannot remember why).

Well, here I am again. My wife has expressed interest in photography (just a hobby/upgrade from her phone).
As I am sure the technology has changed, I wanted to ask your recommendations. I am sure the advice is better
here than what I received from Best Buy.

Budget- As my wife is just starting out, I would prefer a camera that is easy to use. Most of the time it would likely be
on the 'Auto' setting. Budget would be around $1,000.

Type of photography: A lot of outdoor use but would like something that does well inside as well. I know that is pretty generic in what I am asking for but I am looking for more of a multi-use camera.

Zoom- Would really like a decent zoom feature. Auto and manual zoom option??

And finally, where do I buy this camera- Amazon, Cameraland??

Please keep in mind I have no idea what I am talking about when it comes to photography! I will just take advice and go with it.

Thanks

For a small camera that takes great photos there is nothing to compete with the Sony RX100.

I think it is in its 7th iteration now.

Leave it on auto and you will get very good pictures.

Takes fantastic short video clips too.

We had several on our safari, and I always carry one with me.

Sadly, the other camera manufacturers have forgotten this segment of the market.

I love photography, and I have access to every major camera makers models.

Nothing compares with this one.

Thank you Saeed. This is the exact kind of recommendation I was looking for.

I think I will buy it with accessory kit as well.

Ordered it and am quite excited. I believe it was around $900. Decided against buying a bunch of accessories for it, I’ll let my wife do that.
I’m looking forward to seeing how it does.

There are very few accessories that you might need.

I use non.

Well, I do have dozens of everything conceivable attachments and tripods, gathered over the years.

But for a pocket camera like this, I hardly use any.

Very rarely I might use a small tripod to place it somewhere.

Was flying over the Alps this afternoon on a trip from Dubai to Geneva, and had it with me.

Took a few photos and a few video clips.

Thanks Saeed, for the recommendation. I have also been looking for a small pocket size camera that will fit the bill for trips in lieu of using my I-phone. tu2

We are in Verbier, Switzerland, up in the Alps.

Been using both a Sony RX100/7 and it’s bigger brother the RX10/4

Fantastic cameras.

Going on a helicopter ride this afternoon and hope to take a few good pictures.

I will post some on the Photo Album Forum once I am back towards the end of the month.

I think at times we (at least me) believe that the phone has replaced the camera (which I am sure this is not the case). I guess for a clueless, amateur photographer like myself, that may be the case. With that said, if I can get some better pic's with a camera, it will be well worth it.

There is absolutely no comparison.

Cameras are better hands down.

Phones are great for close pictures.

Once you have a bit of distance the game changes.

This afternoon we went up in a helicopter over the Alps.

One was using a Canon SLR with a short lens.

One used his phone.

I used a Sony RX10/4, which has a 600mm zoom.

We pooled our pictures, and videos.

Non of their pictures comes even close to mine!

I ended up by giving them 499 pictures, and I put about 44 video clips into one video.

Funny this.

This morning I found that two friends got one each of these cameras for Christmas!

Someone was listening to my recommendations!

They are coming over to our place for dinner tonight, and said they wanted advice on the cameras.

I told them these cameras are so simple to use, even they can do it!

Their partners laughed! clap

Ha ha…

My wife is charging her’s now. It has been snowing hard for the past few days (we are right on the snow line). We probably have received close to 24 inches.

I’m hoping to get some pic’s when this weather breaks and the wind stops.

So, what's your wife's verdict on the camera, Jason?

She likes it.

Not a lot of pics other than some pictures of all the snow in Logan canyon. I’ll try to figure out the pic posting and put up some pics.
