Years ago I used to take my Nikon FM and a Polaroid for photography in bush villages in Africa. It was a great combo because I could hand out a few polaroid photos and gain the confidence and interest of people, who then would let me photograph anyone and anything with my 35mm. Today most of us don't want to carry a bulky Polaroid and film is a hassle to find.

I think on my next trip I'm going to take a small portable battery operated inkjet printer which will let me print directly from my digital camera and try to accomplish the same thing. It would also be great to leave photos with trackers and camp staff if it's a hunting safari. I can recommend the Canon Selphy line of printers. Dimensions are 4.7" width X 2.3" height X 6.7" depth and it weighs about 2 pounds. The rechargeable batteries are an option worth considering for this. See link:

Since I sometimes accidentally take a quality photo with my DSLR, I like the idea of being able to leave a good print with the locals who don't have computers and internet. The little Selphy printers produce good quality archival prints.

I got the Polaroid one for my nice, the prints are tiny, but it's nice.
The paper is quite pricey though.

We always take one of the small dye sub printers with us, as the photos are really appreciated in camp.

Now that is a terrific idea. Have large format Tektronix Dye Sub and it does a beautiful job. Small format dyesub would be equivelant of polaroid which is fading.

What particular model do you use?

I have used the little Kodak combo unit that includes a printer. It will print up to 5x7 in color or bw. Not too expensive and from camera to print only about 15 minutes.
Not terribly bulky and inexpensive for prints.
I used the Kodak Easy Share.

We have tried several makes, and settled on either one of the Canons or Sony's models.

The prices are about the same, for both printers and consumables, and the quality is also the same.
