My daughter-in-law's D5 quit working. for some dumb reason the shutter will not release. I have tried a new memory card, but still nothing. Minolta/Sony has a notice out about a glitch when the camera has not been turned on for a while that shows an error message, but will work if you turn it off and back on. This one won't. It feels like the shutter button may be bad. Sony wants 285.00 flat rate to fix, another repair shop wants 250.00 and may go up or down. Should I spend the money or write it off. This was a $600-700 to start with.
My Minolta film cameras just keep going and going.

Is it safe to let for a 58 year old man run around in the woods unsupervised with a high powered rifle?

If you can't fix it yourself, toss it.

You could literally just about buy a new equivalent camera for what they want to repair it. Honestly, the chances something else doesn't go wrong with it even after they fix it are pretty slim.

In short after you pay to get it fixed, if something else wears out or breaks you're gonna feel pretty dumb.

Is it possible that some knob or switch is not letting the shutter operate? Best to read the owner's manual to be sure. Or post your question on a digicam forum.

Oh Hell I read the manual, I took it to the experts, no one knows until they get into it. If I wanted to post it some where else I would have, Just making small talk with my buddies. I just hate to toss a 600.00 three year old camera. And it does not take much to make me feel dumb. Thats why I stick to film. As long as I have light, I can make an image. My other daughter in law did not know what a slide was. this is a girl with a masters in computer enginering. digital is great for those who like it, and for snap shots, and a lot of artests do great work in digital, but my silver process will last longer than the technology that supports digital pictures. In ten years you are going to have lost the ability to view anything that has not been printed. Think not? try to retrieve data stored on a large floppy disk.
I don't mind having one foot stuck firmly in the last centry. My favorite guns, amunition, cars, tv shows movies, music art cameras and women were all born in the last centry or before.

I wish I could help you. I really do.

If it were mine. NOT THAT THIS IS A GOOD IDEA.

I'd take it apart. Clean everything up inside that looked dirty. Put it back together and cross my fingers.

Sometimes that's all it takes with these things.

The question is how much do you have invested in lenses and other accessories? With Minolta no lounger making camera equipment it may be worth paying the $285 to fix it, rather then switch to a different platform and start over with lenses etc. The d5 is a good camera.

I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.
