Can anyone provide their experience with the wireless connection SD memory cards for digital cameras sold under the Eye-Fi name? The concept seems good, but do the work?

After that swelling tide of response I've decided to buy one and see just what the heck it's good for. You can all look forward to my product review.

wink,

I looked at these and did not see the point.

The prices of SDHC and SDXC cards have dropped so much, I can get more capacity for less than the cost of an Eye-fi card.

For example, a 4GB Class 6 Eye-fi costs $40 at Walmart. For $30, I can get a 16GB Class 10 SDHC.

The faux convenience of not having to plug the card into my PC, laptop, or tablet does not warrant the huge price difference.

Some of the claimed capabilities are a little vague so I hope to see what it can really do. I have a little Canon S95 which I use sometimes for shots out on construction sites. Two things about the card interest me, the geotagging (the S95 does not have this, although the new S100 does) and the possibility of direct uplink to an internet site through telephone based communications, freeing me from finding an internet connection. Lots of our work sites in Africa are far from internet connections, but frequently get cell phone coverage. I'll let you know if this really works, or not.

If you have cell phone coverage, why not take the photo with your cell phone's camera and send it off via SMS or MMS?

I can of course do that, but the phone's picture quality and options (macro, etc) is limited and I usually need to take better quality pictures for reports, etc.

Time for a phone upgrade. My HTC Inspire has an 8MP camera (no macro, though).

The Eye-Fi cards, tethered to an iPad, would be awesome to really review a set of shots (trophy photos, group photos, etc...) before moving on. Sometime the camera's viewer just not enough.
