This is a pic that my wife took, during our recent vacation to Florida. She used her pocket Kodak digital. I've been trying to get a picture of lightning for many years and never got one this good.

I think it is a lot easier to get lightning shots with an old fashioned SLR that has a manual shutter, one that has a "B" shutter speed setting. You set the camera up on a tripod during a lightning storm, open the shutter with a cable release, let lightning strike a few times and then close the shutter. Sometimes it works.

You can do the same with a digital SLR. The only difference is that one uses film,and the other uses software to accomplish the same thing.
