Looks like five to eight feet of water, excellant depth for photography.

We were snorkling in the Maldives.

The camera I used was the Canon G9 with the Canon underwater housing.

I found photos turn out much better if the sun is behind you of course, but sometimes that was not possibl, especially with some of the manta pictures as they moved around us.

I could have gotten many more, and probably better photos, if I had an SLR.

I found the G9 tends to take time to focus, and once a photo is taken, it takes a few seconds before one is able to focus and take another.

And I think I need a proper underwater filter. All my photos had a sort of milky look to them, and I had to adjust the levels in Photoshop to make them look better.

I've got both of Nikons new cameras, the D3 and the D300, and without a doubt, both are the best in their class.

I am getting an underwater housing for the D300, so that one set on continous shooting should produce some great pictures.

I will miss the ability to take video clips though, as the SLR won't do that.

But, I will probably take an underwater housing for a small DV camera.

Flying on a sea plane in the Maldives, my family and friends were having a good laugh at my expense.

I has a video camera going, taking a video of the islands we were flying over, and at the same time I had a small digital camera in the other hand taking still of the same scenery!

The laughing stopped as soon as I said "OK, no one gets copies of these photoes then!"

I will dig a few and post them here.
