Thank you Gentlemen: I shall look into the replacement bulbs and do some experimenting. Your advice is appreciated. Have a nice week.

A while back Ken Howell posted a series of How To posts that dealt with photographing guns. I followed the series for three but then lost use of my 'puter for 13 days and when I got back the series was over I guess 'cause I've never seen another. He posted them in the photo thread at 24 Hour Campfire. I take all my gun pictures in my wife's greenhouse on bright sunny days. The greenhouse is made out of those corrugated translucent panels and act as an all around diffuser no glare or hot spots.

Light tents work good to surround an item with soft light. Ebay has some for sale http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2989619461

For close up detail work, like for pictures of parts or bullets I use a giant home made dental eye. One of those circular fluorescent lights, with a magnifying lens in the middle I used to use for electronic work. I removed the lens and shoot through the middle. Works great.
