You are correct in wanting to practice. Just as in hunting and target shooting the more you use your own equipment the better off you will be under the real life circumstances. I also carry my instruction books with me at all times. Even after 30 years of professional photography the new equipment offers so many options it is nearly impossible to remember everything.
