I'm just curious as to the condition of the coyotes around the country. the last several years we have had alot of mange. this year seems to be the same. I think we have more yotes this year, but they are still having mange. My friend has allready shot 7 yotes, and i think 4 or 5 had mange. any fur reports will be appreciated.

Saw one last weekend in the Okla. panhandle east of Boise City and he didn't have a stich of hair on him. The mange has been very bad down there for about 5 years now and taken a large portion of the yotes out. Been good for the bird populations though with reported record pheasant numbers this year.

Coyotes here in Western montana seem to have no mange presently. Shot 34 so far this season and all have been free of mange. Coyote Mike

Lots of mange in various areas around central and eastern Montana. Our local fur buyer told me there are 40,000 put up coyotes in Canada which are left over from last year, 1000 of which are his. He is being extra cautious buying coyotes this year.

I was at the buyer last Friday, he was paying $20-$25 in the round and up to $40.00 for put up coyotes. I trapped a dandy the other day, pale and well furred!1

I am curious as to what is ment by the terms; “in the round†and “Put-up
My guess is that “in the round†means, the whole dead animal not skinned (as killed, no preperation).
And “Put-up†means skinned, fleshed and dried on a board. Am I correct in my assumption?

I am having one tanned,a big dog,$66.00 for the tanning in SD, so $40 bucks for the skin and $66for the tanning plus some profit I would guess $120 or so. But I'm sure a guy could bet a bunch tanned for less money each so???

A great place to get tanning done is USA FOXX in Duluth Minnesota. I had about 50 beavers tanned by them and they did a great job, as well as a great job making a Beaver coat for the wife.

Skinning a coyote is quite easy actually.

Hang him upside down. cut around the fur just below the knee joint on both legs. On the inside of each leg, run a cut from the cut you just made all the way up to the anus. Now pull the skin off from both legs. Next, you want to "case skin" the coyote, so you DO NOT make a cut up his belly. Rather, you skin the tail, making sure to leave the tail attached to the skin, and then pull the whole thing over the belly until you get to the front legs. You case the front lets, and then continue to case up to the ears, eyes, etc. until the hide comes off. If you seen it done once you would say how simple it really is.

I shot two coyotes in the past two weeks and a friend of mine shot four. Here's how I'd rate 'em:

1 prime, 1 good, 2 missing all guard hairs and shabby looking and 2 mangey (1 of which was missing almost all hair from it's tail). Another has been seen in the same area with mange.

Anyways, here's what the good one's look like - came right in to the call. The first is how he lay at the shot, the next is for the photo album.

Good looking and well furred critter. What do you plan on doing with it?

Down here they all pretty much have mange, same with fox too, and the occassional coon. At least down here the hides aren't worth much anyway.

The only stuff down here I've heard of having decent fur prices are beaver and otter. I don't think they can even get mange.

Okie -

I got this one and another while on a work trip 120 miles from home. My friend who owns the farm has a guy who happily takes any fur he can get, as he can use the $$. I was happy having a few hours every night to get out and hunt.

January fur auction around here for stretched/dried coyotes averaged $22, high of $37.50 out of a total of 48 pelts. (Wish I could find the grey fox - average $39, high $50)
