I know alot of you have never snared aor trapped wolves but for those that have what is your favorite snare set up. The past few days I have had 3 wolves chew off and get away. Now they may not live, and that is not abad thing i just like to recover the hides. I use 3/32, 7x7 and 1x19 both. It doesn't appear to make a difference. I have alway been told , if you are killing most of the coyotes that get caught you are set up is right. So far 1 out of 7 coyotes where DOA. I am 50 % on wolves this year with 4 down and 4 that got away. I have never used 1/8th cable, would the slower speed be worth it? Any advice would be appreciated. Having a tree or post for them to get wrapped up in sometimes helps. Are you using a relaxing lock.

1 year I lost 2 wolves with 3/32" snares with #9 wire supports on them. They were on wide open trails with nothing to tangle up in,I still have a bunch but use them in thickets and check them every 3 days,on the open trails (bear) I use 1/8" that are minimum of 10' longer and add extensions if necessary. I tend to use more than enough gun

thanks for the help. I always have plenty of stuff to wrap up on. Most of my sets are in pretty tight cover. Although I have had some success with 14 wolves caught since last January, I have only had 9 in my hands. I would like to improve those numbers. this is my second season trapping so I have a pile to learn. All those catches have been on a 100 acre private land. Do you use swivels on your snares. We by law need to use them with relaxing locks. You can always try the power ram snares. I bought two and the springs on them are strong. Strong enough that you need to watch yourself around them.

Well...this is probably considered unethical But I will go forth anyway String a cable tight between two trees at about 6' up, depending on how big your wolves get. The trick is to make them kinda jump up to get it Hang a couple #10 shark hooks on it and bait them with something a wolf would like The wolf will jump up to get the bait and impale itself on the shark hook with the hook coming out thru the top of its snout No getting away from this

I trap for a living. It is my full time job. someone not far from me tried the fishhook thing for coyotes and caught a dog. The incedent made the paper. Everytime some idiot tries a stunt like this trappers get a black eye and more regulation rammed down our throats. As erict said there are better ways. Full time professional trapper

I think trapper toms advice is spot on. Strong cam and some slack wire works wonders with wolves expiring very quickly! I have always made my set with a large tree placed across the trail with the center of the loop 16'' to center off the ground. With deer in our area, the tree allows the deer to jump over but the wolf always choosing to go under! I then wrap excess wire around tree. Its worked wonders for me never loosing one yet. Good luck!

I only use 3/32 1x19 snares for wolves, but I only use cam locks. I have them in 10' with adjustable end or the 72" on the #9 wire. I've never lost a wolf that was around the neck. Have caught numerous around waist, and both back feet. I swear by cam locks and will never order another snare without them.

I hear you on the camlocks,,every new snare or 1's that come home will leave with a camlock on it! We have lost all our snow and most of the ice here at the Lake,,trapping is at a standdown now. I have 1 set out 10 miles away and no way to get there,, hopefully it goes unmolested!! I tend to use more than enough gun

I snared many coyotes over the years on our ranch in West Texas. We use a very thread thin cable with a lock on the loop. find crawl hole in our fences and hang the wire the size of the hold and the hook on the fence, they choaked real quick and never broke loose, sometimes the may have pulled out a few staples, that's about it..Most all West Texas Ranchers use them.
