The BLR is the Browning Lever action rifle..and only comes in such calibers as 243,308,22-250,358 in the early models as I recall and recently in the longer action in .270 and 30-06 somewhat modified with a ugly pistol grip... The commercial Browning Automatic Rife came in .338 Win, 300 Win and 7 Rem magnum as I recall, it further came in smaller calibers and a somewhat smaller frame and these were actually pretty nice guns in smaller calibers...The belted cases were a rather awkward rifle in that with the longer and heavier barrel were just too long overall IMO.. The Newer BLRs in 30-06 could probably be converted to a .338 as the action is long enough, and being clip feeder I don't see why not..but I wouldn't swear to it..It too is a very long action resulting in a overly long rifle IMO. AS you can see by my post the downside that I see with both the auto and lever Brownings is the long action makes for a rather clumsy oversize, too long for a hunting rifle, at least the auto is IMO, and based on that the lever would surly be..That said many I know really like the Browning auto in those belted calibers and they do tame the recoil a good deal as a heavy auto would. Bottom line the auto could be converted to any short belted caliber up to a .458 Win, Just some off hand impressions on my part. I had done a quick Google search and found several articles on BLRs in .338 Win Mag....but going back and reading them it looks like forum discussions where someone has confused/combined .338 Federal and. 358 Win. _______________ DSC NRA Benefactor

Interesting timing WRT my most recent hog hunnt. Two brothers hunting with me had very interesting lever action rifles. K had a BLR in .358 and he took his boar early with one shot. J had a Savage 99 .308 rebarreled to .338 Ruger and he had done custom stocks in French walnut, making it a very attractive package. He took his boar at close range where the dogs had bayed it. The story if you are interested is by me on AR and the specific forum is Hogs Hunting. The BLR currently is available in both 7mm rem mag and 300 win mag and has been made in those cartridges for years. Info that it was or is only a short action and just recently became a standard action are incorrect. They are available in both straight grip, pistol grip, and take-down. So, you could probably have it re-barreled to 338 win mag. I know another AR member who had one re-barreled to 375 Ruger. Mike Legistine actu? Quid scripsi? I have a steel receiver blr in 270 Winchester. It has a straight grip, but the receiver is larger and heavy. It also has a 22 inch barrel. So it is not as compact as the short action models. Not interested in selling it. However last time I checked there was a steel receiver 7mm magnum at a pawn shop in Athens Texas. It has been there for a while. Has straight grip and it is heavy and has a long barrel. It would probably make a great 338 Win. Heavy and a long barrel. I think the name of the pawn shop is Army Navy Pawn. There is only three pawn shops in Athens and you could locate it on google.

You could have it done but BLR's are available in 325WSM and that would be pretty close as well as being a handier size action. The longer BLR's are a bit unwieldy IMO.

I am really trying to figure out how a standard action BLR is unwieldly or "too long" for a hunting rifle. The data doesn't seem to support it. A BLR is actually an 1/8 of a inch shorter than a mauser for the same length barrel and I just measured both of mine and the BLRs balance is actually centered in the middle of the action where a mauser is often slightly more forward and closer to being under the front ring. I thought we were talking leverguns, not bolt actions ? Anyhow, when comparing the short and long action BLR's I find the longer action not as handy to use. Several other posters on this thread also mentioned it, so I guess I am not alone with that view. If you're happy with how the long BLR handles and feels, that's all that matters.

We are talking lever guns and hunting rifles in general. The other post says the BLR is too long for a hunting rifle, so what better to compare it to than the most universal bolt action. First bit of advice. Find a long action BLR, shoulder and function the action, BUT be aware that dang long bolt throw will come back and may hit any glasses you are wearing. This happened to me, when the 270, and 30-06 first came out, I thought OK, we can rebore or rebarrel it into a 35 Whelen, until the dang bolt came back and smacked my glasses, and marked the lense. I put the gun back on the rack and walked away. JW

Mike. At that time in my life I was 6 foot 4 and weighed 240 pounds. I normally use a stock that measures 14 1/4" pull. BUT and this is a big BUT, as I shoot left handed I normally lift my cheek up and tilt the rifle to one side to operate the right hand bolt guns. While the lever actions I leave my cheek in place. Even if I had added to the stock length I would be too close to the working part of the rear of the bolt. JW

I’ve been a fan of the BLR for many years, and have owned five of them. My Belgium-made .308 is my primary hunting rifle with which I’ve taken Antelope, Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer and Elk at ranges out to 325 yards. I looked at the longer action rifles when the came out a bit over 20 years ago, and like a Jim, I put it down and walked away. IMO the extra weight and length detracted too much from the inherent utility of a lever gun. I learned a long time ago that a faster, heavier bullet doesn’t make up for a bad shot so I’ll stick with my .308 for most all my hunting. I also learned that I carry my rifle a whole lot more than I shoot it, so I want the lightest, easiest carrying rifle I can get, and one that works for a left-handed shooter too. The BLR is it for me. Did I mention how great it fits into a scabbard? John Farner If you haven't, please join the NRA!

I highly reccomend having a BLR rebarelled. I had a .300 Win. bbl. changed out to a .375 Ruger and I’m very pleased. I’ve used it on everything from cape buffalo to javelina. A .300 to .338 rebarell should be a cinch.Only certain smiths do this, I reccomend Lester Knipe at The Varmint Shop in Orefield PA. He’s worked on many of my BLRs and he’s terrific.

I am more interested in getting one re-bored,to keep costs in check, JFE, mentioned the 325 wsm? it's a good choice, but I am hooked on a 250 gr bullet going as close to 2700 fps as possible,I have taken a lot of African game big & small with that combo & am very confident with it,went to my local Cabela's to see & shoulder a BLR but to my regret they did not have any on the shelf,so the search continues. Mike, If your referrig to my post I said the commercial BAR in .338 is too long and cumbersome IMO therefore the BLR "may" be the same. I have a friend in Boise that shoots the 7 mag. and I found it too long and cumbersome.. I have always liked the BLR in the old straight grip steel gun in .308, 284, 243, and the rare 257 and 22-250 best I recall..They are super accurate out of the box as a rule, and make dandy saddle guns. As to the larger 270, 30-06 guns and up I,m not impressed... crshelton, I can't imagine converting a Savage 99 beyond a 338/284 based on the rotor and action length..recutting a rotor in itself is major gunsmithing for sure, add a belted round and its gotta be an interesting project..Isn't the .338 Ruger the 375 Ruger necked down?, that's a pretty big cartridge, Id like to know more about this conversion in that Im a real 99 fan and would certainly be interested in such a gun...
