How can I tell the model E,G, etc...

Top: 2500-300 or 300Savage.
Middle: 30-30
Bottom: 22Hi-Power takedown

The bottom one in .22hp is a model 'H'. I had one of these once and investigated to get to know the model. Mine was also marked '1899' which indicated it was made before 1912.

I never really got no good accuracy with this gun. I think the take-down system wasn't stabil enough like on a Winchester. My 1899 Savage was in near min condition. I bought the gun in 1992 and 80 rounds from Norma (5,6x52R). With Norma ammunition I got dinnerplate groups at 50m. I tried with Hornady .227' bullets to reload ammunition that I thought would do better. I kept the gun for several years as I like it, but ended up selling to make room for another gun.

Love to have a model 1895 or 1899 solid frame in .303savage with 26" octagon barrel.

Add a but pad and take away the checkering and the top one is my 250/3000.My barrel is 22 inch. S# dates it to 1937 or 38. so EG ?
My .308 is an F model, from just about 1960.
I should have my A model tomorrow if you believe the tracking data...

The .30-30 is an "H" I believe.

I have a little takedown 1899 that shot poorly as a 22 hipower with everything I tried, .224's, .227's, .228's; factory, Norma brass, resized brass, all....so I had it rebored to 25-35, and it shoots great, now. It's also legal here in Washington state as a deer cartridge, which the hipower was not. I was a bit concerned that the takedown feature was part of the problem; it's not! My little reblued, mistreated and mended wreck has become my favorite rough-country rifle, and a modern Williams tang sight makes it one of my most precise iron-sighted rifles.

My 250-3000 TD is one of the most accurate rifles Ive ever owned, it has bench rest accuracy with lighter bullets, but it shoots 1/2 inch 5 shot groups with the Hornady 117 gr. round nose, it length of bullet not weight that is determined by twist in most instances. My most accurate load is the 85 gr. HP GS Custom bullet, it cuts about a .308 or smaller caliber hole for 3, 5 or two 5 shot groups one on top of the other, for that matter.

What do you think accounts for that accuracy, Ray? On paper, you'd think the two-piece stock and back-locking action would work against it.

Im not sure, my gun does lock up tight and the threads are crisp...but it could be the barrel, the barrel is the heart of any gun IMO..As a matter of fact one could say the same thing about a bench rest gun or target rifle, none of them shoot alike..Ive owned some terribly inaccurate mod. 94s, 70, and Rem 700 but Ive owned some that were tack drivers..you roll the dice every time you buy a gun..

I have had great luck with Savage 99s and Ive been able to make everyone of them shoot by glass bedding the forend tight and level to the bore, and its connection to the action and running a bead of glass around the butt stock junction..I don't recall one that didn't respond to this fix, and the shot one inch as a rule, a few shot 1.5" average and there is nothing wrong with that..I bet Ive done a 100 of them for folks..Its a little tricky as you can sure stick a butt stock easy enough so proceed with care and know your business with glass..If you have never done one I suggest that you only glass the forend and maybe the rear of the tang at top and bottom and stay off those thin sides..

Keep in mind their are a lot of super accurate two piece stocked single shots..

The world of the Savage 99 is complicated and wrought with mod. numbers, as they changed mod numbers with every little change..all used the basic action. very early mod. 95 Savages were made by Marlin in .303 1895 to 1899. There were 30 mod. 99 savages separated by letters of the alphabet such as 99T,99F, 99EG pre war, 99EG post war, and on and on.

The Savage mod. 99EG (post war) was only produced as the 99EG (post war) from 1945 to 1961, in calibers 250-300 and 300 Savage; In 1955 they added the 243,308 and .358.

The EG post war had a solid frame, checkered grip and forearm schnable forend, 24 inch barrel only. It was the gun that made Savage famous.

The early 99EG known as the "pre war", came in 22 Hi Power, 250-3000, 30-30,303 in a 22" barrel,and the 300 Savage in a 24 inch barrel.stock was a pistol grip with a schnable forend and was not checkered.1935-1941. of note to this thead the first 22-Hipower came out in 1899 Hammerless sporting rifle and set the shooting world on fire, as did the 250-3000. The 25-35 showed up shortly in this model in the 1899 carbine mod.

Very early Savages were 1899 Carbine, 1899 Saddlel gun, 1899 Fwt., 1899 Take down, follow by mod. 99A,B,C,D, E, F, F pre war, G pre war, and K, then H new model and another list of mod number I won't go into, least I get into writing a book..Savages in the early guns came in 25-35, 38-55, 32-40 and 303 and 410 shot gun. and the coming of the take down added the 250-3000. Ive tried to condense this post to the subject at hand, if Ive confused or left anything out let me know and I'll try to clarify..
