The largest may be the 284 Win.

Early 99's have a shorter stroke or are shorter? and will not handle the 2.8" cartridges.

I've got a 99 in 284 on it's way, from the reports I'm getting she kicks like a mule, but I'll let you know when it gets here!

No I wish it was an F! It's a lowly C but hey, it's in 284!



I do know what you mean though, I use my post-mil F in 300 Savage for deer season and the old shoulder hurts after you take a couple pokes to see if she's still in the ball park.



I also have a 1895 (303 savage), 1899 (32-40) and an 1899 (38-55) I haven't been able to try out yet cause of the snow, but soon!

I have owned a number of Mod 99s in .284 and even custom stocked a few of them...The recoil isn't bad at all, about like a .308...The 99 handles recoil well IMO...

Remember to load it about 2 grs. short of a bolt gun and book max...

Savage M99 calibers of which I am aware: .30-40 Krag, 303 Savage, 22 Hi Power, 250-300, 25-35 Win., 300 Savage, 30-30 Win., 32 Win. Spl., 32-40 Ballard, 22-250 Rem., 243 Win., 308 Win., 7 mm-08 Rem., 284 Win., .38-55 Win, 358 Win. . . . so 358 sounds like the largest caliber. The magazine was "modified" to handle the 308 - not sure what year.

Ixnay on the .30/40 Krag chambering. Ditto the .32 Special. The Krag is way too long, and they simply never chambered the .32 even though it is short enough.

Savage altered the 99 internal dimensions (not just the rotor) when they started chambering the .308-family of cartridges, in the mid-late 50's. Simply swapping out the rotor in an earlier one to convert it to .308/.243/.358 won't work, not even close. The exterior of the receiver remained the same though.
