My 250 -3000 model f has 1-14 twist ...

To Shoot deer sized game I would try the Barnes 80 grain TTSX. Bear in mind that they will be long for the weight but without any at hand I will just have to guess that they would be shorter than the Rem. Core Lokd.

1950 was a turning point in that model and some others, and as I stated in above posts the 99F very early on used some 1x14 twists. Most are 1x10.. Re read in that I said they used some early 1x14 twists in the early 99Fs (1950) as they were left over and Savage was gearing down to stop production of the 99, but decided to cheapen them up and make a clip model, that didn't work out well for them either..They then came out with the 99? the one with the older left over actions with bottom safety, aluminum rotor, 20 inch barrel, schnable stock and straight grip..It was a neat little gun, but apparently the ran out of parts and ditched it, it was the last of the good Savages IMO. At some point in the 70s best I recall they reorganized produced only bolt guns and the crap they produce today. Best of my recollection.

1950 was the model 99F with the short forend, the last 99F...Prior to that Savage did produce several 99fs but they were different. The later 99F had 1x14 twists as they used up some left over barrels then they went to 1x10, Ive had both..My present is a 1950 99F with a 1x10 twist, I recently sold the same in a 1x14..This 99F is the big dollar gun for the collectors, it came in 308 fairly common, 284, 358 and 250 Savage are rare and in the $1100 to 2500 range depending on condition..I have a well used 250-3000, 1950s 99F, clean, lacks much blue wood is solid and Ive turned down $800 for it, which is about what its worth I suspect. I sold a mint one for $2550. about a year ago. some of the later guns bring 1000 to 1800 today..Collecting Savages is a good pastime..

my 99f 250-3000 is 1x14 twist I thought it was 1x10 until I did ramrod twist test...I still use it for Buck hunting loading speer 87 gr bullets this season...I did do the trigger tune thing which is real nice now on creep.

The 1950s 99F is the best 99 every built for a hunting rifle, its much lighter than the 99EG and earlier 99s..In 250 is rare as hens teeth and they only show up for sale about once every two or three years, I have a wishlist in every blog for them..

I just bought a well used one and I mean well used from Cabellas in Or. on Guns Int. its still on there but I got it. rough in that its been hunted a lot, no blue some very light pitting on the barrel that I can fix, solid wood and has a good bore..I'll stick a Leupold Alaskan 7/8s inch tube 2.5X on it and use it for hunting deer horseback and save my other 99s..Got this one for $675. shipped Don't know the twist...Hope its a 1x10 but if not I will deal with that also. I already have a $800 offer but its not for sale yet. I have this thought in my head to polish it out rust blue it and stock it in fine Russian walnut. Like I need another gun project.

Add on, Got the gun, and Cabelas gave me a 10% discount for whatever sales gimmick reason and the gun cost me $609. to my door, pleasant surprise for sure. rock solid gun, needs some TLC that I can take care of easily..PUt it on the custom shelf down the road if it shoots well. I love a custom stocked 99

Great project ...You are right my older 250-3000 from 1918 is heavy wood ..my 300 sav are not bad but heavier than 99f ...

My rare 99EG like your 300 I suspect, with a 3X scope weighs 9 lbs.; My 99 take down 250-3000 with a 2x7 scope weighs the same..but they balance so well you really never notice it..

My 99F 250-3000 weighs 8.5 lbs with a Redfield 2x7 (Leupold made)

That surprised me, I had never weighed them until just now!! that's not much difference.

Great...I have to get out and try my loads with 250f going from 100 gr speers to 87 gr with 1-14 twist ...Rebuilding my chevy colorado in garage can you believe piston rings went on cyl 3 with 46,000 miles..

I should add to this thread that the early 99F and they have produced 3 99F, all with 1x14 and a very few with 1x12 twists, in their history so its confusing..

Most of the very early guns won't shoot heavy bullets, why that is must be the barrel makers of yesteryear. that in itself creates confusion as to the 1x14 twists shootability..

You are right Ray mine 99f was built in 50s and has a 1x14 twist ..Only bullets we could get too shoot well in them was the SPEER/SIERRA even if you went to 100gr speers hot cor shot very good but I went back to 87 grain and at 100 yards bullets are touching with 32.5 grs of #3031 ..The primer is just showing flattening a little so I stopped there..old manuals and articles liked the #3031 powder so I still stay with it..

I talked to a Savage official about the 13.5 and 14.5 twists, He said very possible with the methods we use but the only way that could happen is condition of the throat and that such guns had probably been shot a good deal, That makes since to me because all the NEW barrels Ive tested, regardless of make or model, are accurate as to the stated twist..Just conversation for what its worth, other than that I have no clue.
