Just wondering if any of you gents are shooting a Win 1886 in 45/90 & what's your favorite bullet in this gun.
I have one that is the take down model,it is one of the Jap guns,I want to start shooting it,I have heard it does'nt like cast bullets & the twist is too slow for anything over 400gr bullet weight, any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Bill73,

I don't know about the modern version of the 1886 45-90 but the original was designed as an express round i.e. big powder charge and light bullet. IIRC the 330 grain Gould HP was designed for the 45-90. Since I don't own one I have no idea about how a modern one will shoot cast bullets, but the originals were made for them. You're right, they may not shoot heavier bullets all that well.

what if...(famous last words) you just bought a hundred of the Lasercast 430gr gas checked bullets and fired them in the rifle. Keep one thing in mind, the action is the same length for both, the 45-90 just lets you seat the bullet deeper in the neck. I know, because I have/had both. OAL remains the same.

Dunno about not shooting cast bullets well. Wonder who started that rumor?

Mine's a "Jap" 45-70, and all I shoot out of it are cast bullets. Shoots them fine. I shoot only real black powder out of mine now, and shoot BP bullets in 350 and 400 gr weights. I have also shot 440 hard cast (with that evil smokeless stuff), and 500 gr round noses with BP. Mine's been throated for longer bullets, as the stock chamber wouldn't chamber 440 or 500 gr bullets.

I know the seat depth is different on the 45-90, but I think you could shoot the 350 to 400 cast bullets just fine.

That's a classic rifle, enjoy it!

I've gone one in 45-70 & it handles lead bullets well. I would think the 350grFP would be a great choice.
