The Marlin website says the XLR in 444 has a 20" barrel twist. Is this true? This might change things for me.

The next thing I would have to know is how well you can download the 444 to 44 mag loads. Let's say on the upper end of 44 mag. Maybe a 240 gr. bullet going about 1700 fps.

Possible?

IMR4198 or SR4759 would work great for that. Start around 38 grains of IMR4198 (47 grains maximum) or 27 grains of SR4759 (33 grains maximum).

You learn something new everyday whether you want to or not.
