Great looking rifle, I've got a 1922-made '95 in .405, you'll love the caliber.

Check out Mt. Baldy Bullets for their cast gas check which they cast to .414. This size bullet pushed by RL-7 with Puff-Lon filler at about 1825 fps works exceptionally well for me in my Ruger #1.

I got mine from NEI. A standard 300 gr RNGC

Our local mom & pop general store, emporium, sportings goods is going out of business, so I just bought about 500 Hornandy 300 gr bullets at half price. I think they put these in stock when they ordered my Mod 95 a few years ago, and I would buy a box when I needed them. Don't know why they got so many, I think I have the only rifle in that cal in the county.

DuggaBoye-O;
I am new on this forum and do not want to steal this thread, but can you explain your use of the 400 grain bullets in your .405?
Is your rifle an 1895 Winchester or Ruger #1, or other?
If an 1895, I have other questions on the 400 grain bullets.
Thanks.

PS to 22rimfire - beautiful 1895. I like mine too:

DG energy requirements in most African counties approach 4000 ft/lbs; and even for North American heavy game, many of us like heavier longer bullets in general for penetration

I do also load 300's and 350's.
I am shooting a Japanese Gen III USRAC .(Winchester)

Check out NEI for semi custom molds for the 405.
You can design your own mold at Mountain Molds.
I worked up one for my rifle, using the design feature that is right accurate. It's a 350 grain, gas checked, flat nosed bullet, not unlike some of the flat nosed 500 grain solids for 458 Win.

That looks exactly like the pair I have, assuming that is a standard high grade. My "low" grade sports a Lyman #23 repro receiver sight, I cannot tell what sight that is in your picture.

You are close:
1. The takedown .405 is my shooter and that is a Williams Fool proof receiver sight on it.
2. The deluxe .405 is my looker - it has never been fired and was purchased just because it was so pretty. The seller said it is a Deluxe, but here were no Winchester papers with it.

So far, all I have taken with the shooter is a pronghorn and a Nilgai, using Hornady factory 300 grain ammo which is very accurate. I do plan to take some hogs and larger game first chance that I get.

that IS a deluxe. The silver finish and engraving/inlays are what make it so. About one out of twenty was a deluxe.

I would look for 350 to 400-grain bullets for it.....

How does the zero hold up when the rifle is taken down and reassembled?

I cold not tell by the picture that the standard was a takedown. Mine is not. I do have an 1886 repro in 45-70 that is a takedown and with open sights I have not noticed any zero proplems when taking down and reassembling.

Like you I bought the high grade just because it was pretty, it has not been shot. When my dealer was trying to get a 1895 for me he ordered both, thinking either would be hard to come by, and both came in. I took the standard waited a day and went back for the other.

El Deguello;
Though I am investigating 400 grain loads, my first effort is with 300 grain North Fork soft points and solids.

Shot my first flat point solids series of loads with IMR4895 today and the top two loads were 2151 and 2202 fps. The average deviation was less with the 2151 load of 51 grains, so that may be the accuracy load with 4895. I will be trying some other powders soon to see if there a better fit to this Hornady brass, NF bullet, and rifle.

jkingrph - yes, always been a sucker for pretty. Fortunately, these rifles shoot well too.

NE 450 No2 - so far the TD 1895 rifle is as tight as the Deluxe, which is not a takedown. I also shoot an 1886 .45-90 takedown and it has been shot a lot more and taken down to travel and clean a lot more than the 1895 and it still seems very accurate with the tang peep. Since neither rifle is scoped and I only recently acquired a Lead Sled, most of my shooting with both has been offhand and not from the bench. Now, however, I may play a bit with them just to see if I can get a small group or two out of them. I should have bought a Lead Sled years ago.

I shot my 1895 405 winchester take-down today. What a sweet handling lever gun. Feeding and ejecting smooth as a baby's ass, with the factory 300gr flat point. Quite accurate too. I am really taking a liking to this one. No wonder Teddy loved his 1895's.

A shooter/dealer at the Quigley had a TD in 405W. Asking price was $1500. I had already "acquired" a CPA/Stevens 44 1/2 3 barrel set or it would have gone home with me. Man this last two was a budget buster. CZ's in 404 and 505, the CPA, and the RemBai DR in 45-70. I may be sleeping out in the shop for awhile.

22Rimfire..
Go here and buy the RCBS .416-350-FN gc mold..
http://www.buffaloarms.com/browse.cfm/4,2513.html

Or you can buy already cast boolits from BullShop as he is a commercial caster and will cast to your size and alloy requirements..
Note what he says about the RCBS mold in posts #9 and #58...Also note this thread was started in 2006 and that the fellow that started the thread has a original .405/1895 and his bore/groove dia. seem a little larger than the new 1895's
http://castboolits.gunloads.co...owthread.php?t=10445

I pulled down this thread from my file last nite because I just got this mold the week before last and a push thru custom sizing die this Friday and as I was hand lubing and sizing those boolits I realized I had no loading data for 350gr. boolits..
BTW my boolit comes from the mold at .318 and weighs 375 grs. gc and lubed...and I am sizing it down to .314"...I have a .318" lube size die on order so when it gets here I can lube/ size in that die and size down to what ever size I want with in reason..with ACWW it sizes down very easily to .314"
I have one of these 1895's in TD for several years now but plan on selling it NIB after a I retire...What I am reloading for now is a Ruger #1 in this cal. It has a groove dia. of .413" and a bore dia. of .405" with with a very short throat..

I ran across a guy over in W. Monroe, La at the range who said he had a special .405 coming. He was having a CZ Ringneck sxs shotgun converted to .405 by Clark Custom Guns over in Shreveport.

jkingrph;
Please let us know how that works out if you can.
I saw two nice Belgian made .405 doubles at the Tulsa gun show two years back, but by the time I decided on one, both were sold!
One went for $3,500 and the other for $7,000.

That may be a problem, I do not know his name and I am not over there that often.

He did say it was costing $6000.

I think I have seen him before and will remember him. It will probably be this fall when the weather cools off before I head back over that way.
