I prefer the tang, because that's what I'm used to. Have them on a Marlin Cowboy, Winchester Model 53 and a Browning low wall. Pete "Be kind to your neighbor, he knows where you live."

I've not used both, but I like the tang mounted peeps. Sight radius is longer, and the peep is closer to the eye. Andy

Try the tang. I have the Lyman and the Marbles on different Winchesters and I like that it puts the sight closer to my eye. Plus I think it looks a lot better. TH

I put a tang site on the 1886. It was accurate and fun for a short while. I never got the hang of shooting not being able to grip the rifle with my right hand. I pulled the tang site and installed a reciever site. Jim "Whensoever the General Government assumes undelegated powers, its acts are unauthoritative, void, and of no force." --Thomas Jefferson

A hunting style receiver sight is sturdier and ready at all times. And it will never poke you in the eye.

I much prefer the peep. They are up out of the way and provide fast sight pick up. The tang sight is in the way for me and not astectically pleasing.

The tang sights have a cool factor but I like reciver sight. “I am an American; free born and free bred, where I acknowledge no man as my superior, except for his own worth, or as my inferior, except for his own demerit.” Theodore Roosevelt (1858 – 1919)

With a model 94 Winchester, or one of the other Winchesters meant for light calibers, you can get away with a tang site. With higher powered cartridges shot from awkward positions, especially when shooting uphill, you are engangering your eyesight at least to some degree if you use a tang-mounted peep. There is at least one instance on record of a lady hunter in the Yukon shooting uphill at a game animal, only to have the tang sight thrust into her right eye on the first shot. She was blinded in that eye forever, as of that instant. Forgetting all that, receiver mounted sights are more practical for hunting, in my opinion, because they are much less inclined to be knowked out of alignment in rough field use....not to mention less expensive too if you want one with windage adjustment. I've got tang peeps on my Winchester .22 pump guns and that is what I learned to shoot first. However, I like the receiver sights a lot and that is all I have on my "high-power" lever guns. The tang sight should be all right and it does give more sight radius and theoretically is more accurate. But, I don't see poor accuracy with the receiver mounted sights. Eleanor was fine, I think it was Cpt. Paul Curtis' wife that lost her eye, shooting a Savage 99 I believe. Tim

I have Marbles Tangs (like these a lot) on two pistol caliber Levers, and Williams FP's (nice, like these) or 5D's (OK) peeps on the rest. Receiver sights are easier for me to live with, the tangs are also real nice. John Retired husband & grandpa "Life brings sorrow and joy alike. I have both. A tang sight on a 39a, and a Williams receiver sight on my muzzle loader. My old eyes shoot either OK. I can't shoot open sights though.

In my youth a lot of folks used them but most didn't like them. I prefer a receiver sight.. I have seen tang sights stick folks in the eye on recoil mostly on uphill shots and they sometimes did some pretty serious damage. That always bothered me. Receiver sight. I have various versions of NECG's peep sight for scope mounts, as a backup or alternate for the scope, and I got used to receiver sights. When I got a Winchester 1895, I eventually replaced the open sights with a receiver sight for consistency. It required a ramp and a higher front sight, but the final effort works much better than the factory sights. .30-06 Springfield: 100 yrs + and still going strong
