This rifle has a few light marks but it's just to nice to hunt with it has a full hex barrel steel butt plate, and real nice "H" Inlayed in gold. I have dies and about 200 brass and about 50-60 loaded rounds. It may be for sale or trade but mostly showing her off

Hmmmm, very interesting conversion,I wonder what are the pros & cons versus a conversion on a model 71 or 1886?

Pro and Cons
71 easier to do as the OAL length of the 50-110 is or should be 2.750 (For both guns) to make it easier to load thru the loading gate. The real issue with the 50-110 is the bullet point and people wanting ot hang it out to 2.800" -TO LONG- The 86 you have to deal more with the S hook and the carrier width, so for me the 71 is an easier gun to convert and it is a PG to start with.

I tend to use more than enough gun.

I'd pay to see an 1895 in 50-110. Are you sure it isn't a M71 or M86?

Doug, have you ever considered doing a straight walled .416 to .512 x 2.5" Rigby conversion, or bottle necked design? Is there enough meat in the chamber walls of the 86/71 to handle a 0.586" base diameter at safe design pressures of that levergun?

I've fiddled with a Marlin 336 to handle 2.70" OAL, depending on the bullet nose profile and wanted to do a Rigby based cartridge to get the case capacity of ~125 gr H2O...that would make the 50-110 look like a younger brother and still keep the loaded OAL to ~2.75.

Just a day dream more than anything else...

Whoops...Sorry, fingers got to walking and eyes didn't see... 2.25" case length, that would give about the same case capacity as the 50-110 and the longer 2.5" length would give the 125 H2O amount...depending on the bullet length the usable volume would still be 10% or over to the good.

I find the problem us that with bullets for the 416-45-475-510 that you have OAL issue not case issue. So only way is larger case. Then come getting it thru the loading gate n in tube.
Then is the recoil that will be generated by the extra poop! Stocks won't like it as well as the shooter. Bullets are great so stay in the 400gr at 2000-2050 all you need easy to shoot and penetration is great.

I hate to shot a 45 cal. 475 Turnbull or any 50 that are short barreled 16-20" but put on a 26" same load now that is a different gun.

Bullet placement is key!! Let the bullet do the work.

Stress and strain on the rifle and shooter is certainly issues to consider.

I was asking because I wanted to put a 50 cal bbl on my converted Marlin 336 and I made up some dummies with a Beartooth 475 gr 50 cal bullet that had the crimp groove in the right place for a case 2.25" long and a loaded length of 2.69" that fed through the action as well as the 458 American 400 gr bullet, at the same length.

Number crunching through QUICKLOAD gave an easy 2200 fs, 26" barrel, below 35Kpsi with several powders at/near 100% load density. Energy and recoil could be regulated...4000-5000ft and 50 ftlbs +/- 15.

It would be a heck of a lot cheaper to do a 50-90 trimmed to 2.20" and trim the case rim and use cheap 50-90 dies than to pay 200 plus for a custom set of CH4D dies.

Might have some bragging rights for having the "only" almost 50-90 Marlin 336/1895 on the block...hahahahahaha

Case rim is to big for bolt face as well as mag tube. Body also larger so wall thickness is now an issue also. I dontvyhinkbit will work either in 336-95-1886 IMHO

Not to argue with someone of your stature, but cases can be modified easily.

Basically I started out wanting to best the 50 Alaskan in the 336/95 by going to a larger dia case.

Due to the thinness of the Marlin square threads that action was out of the question even though the 50 Alaskan has been done to many square threaded Marlins.

Then out came the 450 Matlin with "V" threads which opened up the possibility again. A WSM cased 450 Yukon came out and it has been taken out to 50 cal...the 50 WSM.

After a whole lot of monkey motion it boiled down to the 50 Alaskan, the 50 WSM or the 50-90 trimmed to 2.20" with the rim modified slightly, all with a OAL of 2.65-2.68"...the longer OAL can't be ejected in the Marlin, the lever has to be pulled pull out just enough to let the bolt come back a bit...or just loaded so they will eject and loos a bit of velo.

The question is why go through the gyrations when the 50 Alaskan or 50-90(cheaper dies and cases) is just a barrel switch away.

I think the Rigby case can be done also... to the "V" threaded 450 Marlin, but that's another story with the problems already mentioned.

So much for "thought experiments"...sometimes they work sometimes they are a wash, sometime they are just a hole in your wallet.

I won't take up any more time with this...didn't mean to hijack the thread.

NONAGONAGIN

Not a problem, anytime, you can always do things if you set your mind to do it at almost any cost and time involved.

I had one of the new Win. mod. 95 carbines rebored to a 9.3x62, added a Lyman peep sight and it was a super nice gun. It shot the 300 gr. Swifts, 320 gr. Woodleighs, and 286 Noslers to the same POI and in 1.5 to 2.00 inches at 100 off the bench...

I got bored with it and sold the gun, as usual, and as usual regretted doing that, but that is the story of my life with good guns..Maybe I will build another..Got a friend with a 338-06 IMP. and he loves it. Judge G had a 405 converted to a long throated gun and was getting 450-400 balistics out of it, now thats a buffalo gun that would make Teddy R swoon....

Rich , I have a marlin lever in 510 Kodiak express. It is a 50 Alaskan lengthened by 21/100ths on an inch. With a 23" barrel, it will scream. I have done 55oo ft./lbs with it with 450 grain bullets. Mic McPhearson builds them. Lots of gunsmithing though as almost every piece is modified. Its a hell of an accurate gun. All steel and internals are coated with Robar's NP3 finish. Very slick lever action.
