They are made in Texas and are now known as XS sights, I think. I have a Browning 1886 SRC repro in .45-70 with them installed which is just a gem of a rifle, these sights are very compact and mount on top of the receiver; they cost me about $275.00 CDN, but, it is worth it. I am slowly retrofitting all of my lever rifles, except my Belgian BLR and my Sako Finnwolf with them, compact, tough and adjustable, just perfect.

I am about to buy a marlin 1894ss in .44 magnum i will use this rifle next year for deer and black bear in NY with 100 yds being the max distance and more likley 35-50 yards would be the norm. I have used williams peep sights in the past but this time i wanted to buy a lyman 66la for this rifle . Can i please get some opinions on this peep. And i wanted to also know if the lyman #2 tang sight was worth considering. Thanking you guys in advance Tanoose

I have had two Williams Foolproof sights and they both screwed up. I have had and do have several Lyman receiver sights and love them, especially the older all-steel ones. I have had two Lyman Tang sights on '94 Wins., I don't care for them. A very good alternative is the Ashley-XS Sighhts setup, I am now using these on various levers and find them best of all.

Tanoose:

When you are thinking between "tang" and other peep sights it really comes down to how you cock your head in shooting a rifle. The tang sight is great if you never want to move your head forward as you aim. (Many good shooters I have seen when I was a 14 year old using 22s with a tang sight didn't do so -and could drill a squirrel in the head at 75 yards with a 22RF so I'm not telling you the tang is no good at all as a rifle sight) Frankly, at 74 years of age, I'm surprised that the tang sight is still around. It's big disadvantage is that it is OK for the measured, deliberate shot - but if you have to get that rifle up quickly (where your head is moving) I think the tang sight is not so good. (It originated in calm shooting at Western plains buffalo and never was intended to be used in follow up shooting at anything. What if your bear wheels and runs? Ever try to line up on a tang sight at something running as you have been reloading? It's different from the peep on the receiver because it is more natural to put your head forward and automatically pick up the peep on the receiver. I'm not trying to taunt you with my question. I mean that the tang sight disappeared for some good reasons. It just isn't that great. (BTW, you also don't want to be pushing through heavy brush looking for a wounded black with a tang sight. Yeah, you can push it down. Now, what do you aim with if you come on the blackie and he is trying to get up? It's nicer to have your rifle up and aimed without having to first push up a tang.)
