I guessed on a 560 grainers BC, but if it was .6, at only 1400 fps, the bullet would carry over 1000 ft lbs of energy at 1000 yards. That beats the RUM factory loads, and most all other factory loads. Only 23 lbs of recoil in a 13 lb gun. (I guessed on Sharps weight) Recoil would be pretty severe in a Guide Gun, well over 40 ft lbs.

Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!

Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

Well I don't think .6, more like .3.

But yes a large chunk of lead retains a lot of energy over a long distance.

I don't believe you can cycle those Sharps loads in a Marlin. The Marlin doesn't handle a COL over 2.6". You can buy 500+ grain cast bullets and fire them out of the Guide Gun. Recoil is recoil and it is something you have to ignore or you'll develop a flinch.

Well, at least have an OK day Smiler

480 grainer with a BC of .45

Could be shot around 1700 fps in a Marlin, 1800-1850 in a #1.

I shoot that Schmittzer out of my Wesson & Harrington 1871 Buffalo Classic. Mine weigh 488 grains and without a gas check it will not perform very well at 1700+ fps. I shoot them about 1200 fps at paper 600 yards away. Would like to try some steel at 1000 yards. Also being essentially a target bullet they would not create a very good wound channel on game. Let's stop trying to make the 45-70 something its not.

I'm not trying to advocate shooting anything other than targets past 300 with a 45-70. Just showing that a bullet going slow, can outpace a bullet going fast in the long run.

After 300 drop with the 45-70 is not something I want to try to figure out before shooting an animal.

the velocity is too slow to be of any use at distance. Have you calculated the midrage traqectory at 1000 yard? I bet it is over 20 feet! All the energy in the world is useless if you can not hit the target. Thus the main problem for me with this chambering -- range estimation and holdover!

Tyler, those big old long-range BPCR bullets are fun to shoot out of a Marlin, aren't they? I was single-loading some BP loads with the Lyman 457125 Government bullet the other day in the XLR. I wasn;t getting a full burn in the 24-inch barrel, but it was still a hoot.
