I've wanted an 1892 Winchester since I was a kid and have decided I need to add one to the stable now.
I've looked on Gunbroker and in Cabela's gun rooms and for the life of me can't see any consistency with pricing on these rifles.
What price should I expect to pay for a rifle that is shootable with a fair bore?
I would like a 25, 32 or 38 WCF, seems like the 44/40's are higher priced generally.
Also seems like the 20" barrels and saddle ring guns are higher as well so give me a fair estimate of the range to pay for a 24" round or octagon 1892 rifle in 25,32 or 38 WCF in fair condition.

That's a tough question, as the price varies so much, and pros and non pros price them for sale on the internet, and have no clue as to value much of the time..

I would say a oct. rifle 92 in decent shape, meaning a shiny bore and no pitting, but also silver actions and browning barrel will fetch $2000 or better..conditions btw is everything..The same rifle with a rough bore and lots of wear and might be an accurate shooter as bore condition isn't normally critical in these old slow moving calibers should bring $800 to a $1000..Lots of junk out there for less however..

I have found the SRC's to bring the highest price in decent condition, in both 92 and 94..

Marlin makes a small action 92 type rifle and designated it the mod. 94 Marlin, it comes in the same pistol calibers and they run a bit less most of the time.

I have a decent mod. 92 rifle with a rough bore that shoots great, but the serial number is 178, first year of production and its a bonified Texas Ranger Rifle, value is $20,000 to $75,000 or more depending on who your talking to, so much for experts!!

There are a lot of 44-40, 38-40s, 25-20, and 32-20 and even the 218 Bee, As I recall the 219 Zipper is on the 94 frame?? out there, and for a shooter you might consider a new knock off in 44-40, 44 Spec., 45 colt or 357 mag for under $500..

On occasion you will run across a mod. 92 Win that has been converted to a 357, and they sell pretty cheap..

I knew Parker, and don't remember him ever having a lever gun.

for a decent original in good condition 1,000-1,500 wouldn't be out of line.

a good Rossi copy is about 5-600 for the 24" rifle version.
Chiappa and the others will want @1200.00 for a new reproduction.

Just get a Rossi carbine and smooth up the action. Unless you can afford a good Winchester. Then buy a real one.

I think I decided I want a real one and not a knock off.
I've noticed pricing is all over the page and basically the same gun can range from 1200 on up to 2400 with no noticeable difference in condition, caliber or features.
I've seen decent ones go for 800 on up so that's why I asked what I can expect to pay.
A 20" or 24" round barreled rifle, 25, 32, 38 cal., in fair condition that functions is all I'm after.

Possibly consider the Browning Model 53 in 32-20. Very nice wood, pistol grip and checkering. Not difficult to find one around $1200.00 or a bit less. I own both the Browning Model 53 and two Winchester 1892. The cost of the Browning was about half what I paid for each Win 92.

The gun in the photo is an 1894, still a good buy.

One of my luckier purchases was an 1892 in 25-20 for $350.00 from Cabela's. They thought it was cold blued. Turns out it is about 90% original blue, excellent bore. It has been D&T or scope mounts though. They are great shooters.

I agree its a mod. 94 in which case it ain't a 38-40..

Drill and tap ruins collector value and makes the gun a good buy for a shooter..I have several like that, holes don't bother me, I fill them with black glass and shoot them..they can't be repaired to suit a collector.

But 2000 gets you a very nice 32/20 and a decent 44/40. A shooters grade 32 or 25/20 can be had for 1300 pretty easy.
25/20s With decent bores are harder to find. They were varmint rigs often and shot a bunch.
The 32/20 is fun and i know a guy who deer hunts with it. Power wise, its about even with a GI30 carbine. ...tj3006

Can't argue that, one just never knows what a rifle can be had for until he shops and he should have an idea on value, but the problem has always been geographical it seems..A pre 64 94 in Idaho can be had for $375, a pre war 25-35 for $800, and a Win. 71 for around $800. That's what I paid for the last three at our local gun show..I doubled my money on each of them on the internet, Its a crap shoot and doesn't always end up that way..Locally I could probably buy "decent" meaning a rough bored but clean 25-20 mod.92 for $500 to $600, and minty one for $2500 or more..I shop for bargain Winchesters, shooters mostly that sell pretty quick at good prices. Its really hard to put a price on any of them unless you have the gun in your hands....

Most of the shooters I've seen recently go for around $1100-1300.

I paid $850 for a round barrel, button mag carbine in 25-20 wcf and thought I got a great deal until I notice it had 3 extra drilled and tapped holes on each side of the receiver.

It's still a great and fun shooter with a clean bore but no collector value.
