Hi fellow lever action appreciators! I am new to the forum and have a problem. My eyes are getting OLD! Even peeps are getting hard to use. I was wondering if any of yall could recomend a quality gunsmith to install a barrel with a rib on my Browning 71 .348. I would want to have express sights (Big) and internal to the rib a quality detachable scope mount so I could put a scout scope on when my eyes cant find the sights! I do not want any mounts that destroy the lines of my beautiful mod 71.

Also suggestions on barrel contour would be welcome. I was leauning towards flat sided to round with a banded front sight.

I bought a Krieghoff drilling a couple years back and have greatly enjoyed the on off pivot scope mount, that is what got me to thinking about my Browning 71 and how to scope it without making it an abomination.

My vision is a fine looking rifle with the quarter rib, the scope goes on when needed and then back off most of the time.

Comments and recomendations welcome.

Hank

PS: The .348 murders these Texas white tails! The pigs will lay down and play nice when it talks to them also!

Interesting idea. No, that's a damn good idea.
My guess that Atkinson on this site and in this topic would be the man to ask.

Keep us posted

I would bet that there are several 'swing off' scope mounts that have been historically offered for this rifle. My bet would be to look for one of them.

Try a Ruger rib off a No1. I have installed several of them on Model 70's with great success and the barrel contour on a 71 is similar. They are already set for folding rear sight and detachable rings. Might need a slightly higher front sight. Sounds like a good idea and I can visualize it as being pretty neat looking.

I think the biggest problem with those forward mounted scopes is that they radically alter the balance point of your rifle and to me at least, one of the reasons why I prefer to use a levergun are its handling and point qualities. You might want to consider getting a BLR and scope it conventionally.

JFE, I agree that the scout scope unbalances the rifle for a permanent mounting. That is why I thought the pivot mount system on my drilling would be an elegant solution. Carry the scope with me, and when I need to shoot at longer range install the scope and take care of business. As bad as my eyes are becoming I can still get the deer at normal ranges with open sights, it is the early and late times or longer distances that cause me problems.
I have Marlins and find them to be great rifles, but they do not carry or feel like the Mod 92, 94 or 71.
Plus I have come to love the .348 here in Texas. The 200 gr bullet @ 2500 fps just kills every thing in the state right now!
I had not thought of the Ruger rib, that might work out well, thanks Zimbabwe.

I cant argue with any of that. Been thinking about what I'll be doing down the line as my eyesight is not as sharp as it used to be. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and post up the results.

I too have the same affliction of old eyes and the peep sight on my Browning 71. I took it off a month ago and the factory rear sight went back on. Shot it yesterday and I sure could see the difference.
I have been looking for a picture of a 71 with a scout mounted Trijicon Reflex that I saw some time ago but have been unable find it. It sure was a slick looking rig.
You have a great idea and would like to see the pictures of finished product.
