I have never been keen on the fact that I always have to clean my lever gun without taking the bolt out. For that matter, I have not had the bolt out to clean its insides.

Does someone have a step by step procedure for removing the bolt from a Winchester Model 71.

Are there specific risks associated with trying to remove a model 71 bolt?

Nice link Naphtali.

BUT.

The Winchester M71 has a differnet mainspring / coil spring / hammer strut system, as well as a hammer sleeve, that the hammer screw goes thru. ( Big trick there, if you do not know about it. )

Also is uses a capitaved coil sping / plunger system for the carrier to lock in the up and down position. ( No problem, really easier.)

As well as a totally differnt locking bolt pin / spring retainer system. ( Another trick, to reassemble. )

No carrier hook to connect the carrier to the lever, so that is easy.

The later ones used a two piece trigger / sear/ interuptor, so that can be tricky

Other than that the take down will be the basically the same.

Last night I began an effort to disassemble my "71".
I immediately found that the "1886" instructions do not correlate to the "71".

By following the "1886" instructions, you will not be able to disassemble your model 71 and then reassemble it?

Here are a few items on the "71" that I came across that were not addressed in the "1886" write up.
  • 1] The first hint is that the "71" has only one tang screw. No bottom wood screw.
  • 2] The coil main spring is held in place with a "keeper" and the keeper is held by a cross pin that goes through the lower tang, not a hammer screw.
  • 3] When the hammer spring is removed, two miniature springs "fall out". These two springs apparently are for the trigger, and were never mentioned.
  • 4] The two vertical bolt locking bars are secured by a cross screw into a piece that rolls when you try to remove its screw and there is nothing available to keep the screw and its receptacle from turning. Very difficult to get the screw to come out.
  • 5] The lower tang section does not easily come out of the receiver.

There may be other items also.

So far I have not seen any write-up from someone that has actually documented the disassembly procedure for the model 71.

    Update
I completed a basic disassembling my Win 71 receiver last night.
Bad News is that the 1886 instructions basically do not work for the Winchester Model 71.
Good news is that disassembly turned out to be a fairly simple task. No special tools required, but there were a few items that were not evident and I needed guidance, which was gatiously provided by Jim Wisner.
I have drafted a detailed set of step by step instructions for the "71" and will make them available upon request. (PM me)

Brownells has been selling a loose-leaf (binder style and size) illustrated book of gun dis-assembly, re-assembly, and trouble shooting, for about 50 years. I bought my copy in 1959, and there have been some updates since then. It includes the Winchester lever actions.

It is not cheap, but it is accurate and well illustrated, with good narrative guidance.

My takedown guide is distributed by Radocy. It is for the Winchester, and my rifle is a Browning...there ARE differences, but not major.

I like many others prefer to buy instruction books when I can use it for more than one item. Unfortunately I had only one need for Model 71 disassembly/reassembly instructions.
I prepared the step by step instructions as I worked on my rifle.
I will caution that disassembling and reassembling a model 71 requires moderate skill level and a few unique tools.
Here is a link to the instructions:

Oh, s**t! I've owned the book for decades, also. Should have scanned what Tebsinar needed an posted it. Oh, well.

What someone recently told me about buying the whole thing for just one tid-bit, and I quote:

DON'T BUY A WHOLE COW WHEN ALL YOU WANT IS A STEAK FOR DINNER.

Seems to fit the situation for someone that has a very limited need.
