Allow me to add something about the 1895 Winchester:

I have two reproductions, one is a Browning in 30-06 and the other is a newer Winchester that I had rebarreled to 35 Whelen. I have shot the Whelen quite a bit and find that due to recoil, the split lever tends to bite the hide from my middle knuckle. The 405 will probably be bad for this and so, perhaps the first blood the rifle draws will be your own! Wear a thin pair of gloves and you'll have no problems. Then again, maybe I am the only guy ever bitten by the split lever. Regardless, I thought I might pass this along and save you some skin. I REALLY like the 95 Winchester, a fine rifle all around.

Howdy Jumptrap-

Resurrecting an old thread here. I'm looking at doing the same conversion... '06 to .35 Whelen. I'd like to know about your experience doing this...

What twist rate did you select? What bullet weights have performed well? Shooting cast? Very interested in that angle.

Rebarrel or Re-bore? Any words of wisdom to keep in mind about doing this?

Thanks-

Sky C.

I've got the 95 in 30-06 and 405. I,too, get thwacked on the middle finger shooting the 405, your solution of thin gloves, works. My suggestion is scrap the buckhorns and put a reciever sight on the rifle and a recoil pad.
I use the 30-06 as my understudy for the 405, less wear and tear on the shooter. Both rifles are the same configuration.
Both rifles, for me, are cast bullet rifles. I use the same powder charges, with equal accuracy, that would be used with jacketed bullets. It's nice to see 300 to 500 bullets ready to shoot, that only cost me the time to make them. My experience looking at the jacketed bullets is the Hornady bullets are good and when bought as 'blems' the least expensive. But you are limited to 300 grains. The Woodleighs are great bullets but ungodly in cost. I'm cheap!
I'm looking for a third 95 in 30-06 or 270 for conversion to 375 Whelen, also to be a cast bullet rifle.
Your son will love this rifle.
Jim
