i have what i call a "frankenchester". a few years ago i bought a project off of a friend who had lost interest. he had wanted a true sporting rifle in 7.62x54R, and happened across anew, un fired original production barrel, i'm assuming from the Russian contract. he then found a 1917 made .30-40 action with a sewer pipe bore, and a proper 7.62x54 mag box and follower.my gunsmith has fiddled with it off and one for 2 years now. barrel indexing and headspacing was no problem, but we discovered that the mag assembly from the military contract is a wee bit different then the commercial reciver, and took some work to make it fit. he got it to point where it will feed 3 cartridges, no more then that. ok, i can live with that. my original plan was to just sell it, but i'll never get back what i have in it, so might as well make it pretty and use her. i'm at the point where all i need is furniture( which i have found) and a rear sight. which is the reason for this thread. being the military barrel, it has no dovetail, but a pair of holes drilled for a ladder sight, which i don't have or want. i was thinking have those filled and going with a peep. i can't find much listed for peeps or tang sights that won't break the bank. can i use models designed for the 1894? or would it be simpler to have a dove tail cut and go with classic buckhorns?

270 win, it's the cartridge that makes me punch infants!!!

Williams makes a foolproof designed for the 1895 and 1886 Winchesters. You will need the reciever drilled and tapped for 2 screws to use this sight. They run about $50.00. There is also a sight from buffalo arms that uses the factory screws, if I remember correctly it is a remake of a lyman 21? They run about $120.00. The historically correct buffalo arms job has never appealed to me as it is quite bulky. The foolproof would be my choice.
