No sights?
Confused

You should at least have the original iron sights on the rifle. I have a tang peep on mine

YES, CERTAINLY.

How are we to even guess at the model when you've given us no info about what it does have?

(Barrel length, forend and buttstock styles(s), safety location [tang, or lever], checkered or not, whether the barrel is slotted for sights, whether the receiver or tang are drilled for sights, etc. etc.?)

Have you ever had the forend off? What is stamped inside the forend, if anything? How about the bottom of the barrel? Anything stamped there?

My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

M99s are getting to be collectible. You might want to consider a cheaper more expendable model.

A savage 99 in 300 is a good combination to far better than 200 yards.
Is it drilled for a scope? if so put a light fixed 4 to 6 power on it, load it with some good pointy tipped bullets of about 150 grains and you are one seriously armed woods loafer.

(When I was a kid my father used to tell me that God hated a coward, I finally realized he has even less use for a fool.)

The.300 Savge round is essentially an early attempt by the Savage Arms company after WW I to equal 150 grain .30-06 ballistics of the day (2,700 fps) in a shorter cartridge case and rifle, just like the .308 was by Winchester and others after WW II.

It will do just fine pretty much as far as you can shoot well with iron sights. It may well be slightly MORE powerful than a real "loafer" would want in the woods, but if it is lack of power you are worried about, no sweat G.I.
