Does anyone have an opinion about the 99C. Good or bad. This is the one with the clip.

Excellent rifle. I had a friend who shot one in .308 for years. Some like the detachable magazine and some (like me) prefer the rotary magazine. Either way any 99 is a great rifle.

I dislike the detachable magazine on any hunting rifle, Ive seen them fall out on folks while hunting, reducing their gun to a single shot, and that's a pain..Ive seen them come lose in a saddle scabbard more than a few times, sometimes user error, but never the less they came up short..I suppose one could justify by stating carry and extra clip, but that would probably be discovered just after missing the first shot at a bone and crocket whatever!

Im an avid Savage mod. 99 F and 99EG EG fan..And I love my super accurate 99 take down from about 192?...They are such well machined rifles, the clip cheapened them up big time IMO>

Well the 99C was really pretty. I have a 99F in 308 that had a recoil pad slapped on it by someone not too familiar with the process so I got it cheap. Gunsmith refinished the wood and installed another recoil pad correctly and it is beautiful. I have two other 99's that have maple stocks and no counter but they work flawlessly. I control myself well but I am a recovering impulse buyer (lol).

The 99F (circa 1950), the F signifies featherweight, has the underlever safety, checkered walnut stocks, and came in 300 Savage, 250-3000, 243, 308, 358, and a few rare .284s were built.

In a .308 it is about as good as it gets for elk and deer out to 300 yards with a good 165 gr. Nosler partition or Accubond, as was the .284 with heavier bullets.

I mostly use mine when hunting horseback for deer or elk and in .308 caliber..On foot I use a .338 Win.

I've seen 99F in 300 Savage. A few 100,000 are used every year in the PA deer woods.

I have a 99c in 308. I was surprised how well it shot.

About the only lever action outside the blr that I have never owned. I would be partial to the tang safety model with fixed mag. In 308 please!

I had a 99CD in 250 3000 I foolishly sold.

I have a mag for it yet I should put on the market and sell.

I'm a purist and wouldn't own one. I love the rotary magazine. That's what I have and all I would have.

Spot on Michael..walnut checkered, underlever safety, rust blue, rotary magazine preferably brass but depending on caliber, are specs I demand..I also like the indian head steel or aluminum curved butt plate..

99s went by the wayside for one reason alone, too much handwork required and they were damn expensive to build, and the American gunner simply didn't appreciate quality. Nothing changed either...Same for the Remington 25, 14, and 141. Even the Win 94 SRC etc. have gone to hell in a shoebasket with technology.
