I have an idea to convert a 99 take down to 7x57. Anybody have any experience on a similar job.

I suspect the 7x57 is a little long for the 99 action. You'll have a simpler time choosing a cartridge based on the whatever the rifle is chambered for now.

I have a collection on consignment at this time which includes several different calibers but none of them blow my skirt up, if you know what I mean.

7x57 is too long for the action, try 7-30 waters, be a better match. Les

7-08 will give you 7x57 velocities and is a simple rebarrel to a 308 Mdl 99. I bought a couple of Savage bbls from Gun Parts (Numurich) a decade ago and rebarreled a couple of tang safety 99s in 22-250 and 7-08 so I could have calibers I wanted. I don't like the clip model and being left handed like the tang safety.

The 7x 57 would be too long for the 99 - so why not a .284 Winchester?

The Savage 99 was available in .284 and while it was never a common chambering, the parts you will need, such as magazine boxes or rotors (depending upon which model you do it with) do turn up on Ebay, from time to time.

I'm no expert but I think that it would be easier to convert a 99C, with the detachable box magazine, and these magazines do turn up on Ebay regularly.

I have often thought about this conversion, as complete .284 99's are not common here, downunder, and so I am looking for a 99C to play with.

What caliber is it?
If on a 243 or 308 it would be easier to go to a 260 rem or the 7mm/08 as it would probably only take a barrel swap. The rotor and cartridge stop wouldn't have to be changed out to assure function.

One word of warning ! At one time, when they introduced the 308 chambering, the metallurgy was changed. Older guns are not suitable or safe for the modern high pressure cartridges.

I have not done this myself,
But some one i chatted with on one or another gun site, says you can use the mauser cartridges in the 99-C. As the clip is long enough.
He had one done in .257 roberts , and I belive another in 7X57.
A take down 99 would be an old one would it not ? meaning way back there .250 or 300 savage days. If I am right it might be too short for the 308 case also ?

The 99 I am looking to work with is a 22 hi-power. Some knothead reblued the gun, lever and all. It was nicely done but now this rifle has no collector value. It was just a fleeting thought that was not thought out very well. Thanks for the info, but it appears my idea is not doable.

Comments Please. I have a 99G takedown made in 1938. I restored it because it was very rough. 250 Savage, but with 14 twist. I would love to hunt with it, but can't get it to shoot with larger than 87 gr. bullets. I've tried all the short 100 grainers I can find. Rebore? Make some 90 grain solids? Thanks in advance.

I have a 99CD that was rechambered from 250-3000 to 257AI. I works with bullets up to 100 grains, but can't see how it would work very well in 7x57.
