My dad came to me with an ejection problem on a fairly new Win 94 trapper carbine.

It seems like the extractor claw doesn't properly grip the rim of the cases and will not eject.

Nothing seems to be obviously wrong, or particularly gummed up.

Now, I did notice that the shells are in fairly rough condition, since he has used the same ones for so long each time he hunts, that ejecting them over and over has marred the rims.

But I wouldn't expect this to be enough to cause the problem. All the same tomorrow I'll try to get some fresh brass and see if it's that simple.

Otherwise, can anyone offer any advice as to where to start?

Hi Express,
I have had that problem with a 94 Black Shadow since I got it. (I'm not good with shipping off my guns for repair). Alas, I've put queries on here but noone apparently had this problem before. Then,Lo & behold I got ahold of 500 DWM new brass cases with big thick rims & none of them fail to eject. If you find out what is causing the problem, I'd like to know too!

If the rims are beat up, look carefully at the groove in the end of the barrel that the extractor fit's into when the action is closed. It may have a build up of brass shavings, or other debris that is preventing the extractor from dropping down over the rim far enough for proper extraction. (#1 cause IMO)
Also check the extractor itself that it has not seized in the top of the bolt, or has a build up of gunk under it. (rare, but possible)
Check the tip of the extractor to be sure it's square to the bolt face on the inside, and not worn, or chipped. (Possible but not likely)
Check the cases themselves, are they just plain worn out?
