i took a 94 winchester iin 30/30 in on trade...looks good, but the bore is really rough, pitted.... gun was mmade in mid 1980's.... i shoot a 357 herret in my 10" t/c contender... and often wondered what it would do in rifle... anybody done this????.... go big or go home ........ Dunno if it would feed without modification. How 'bout a 30/30 necked up to 35? Simple, should feed, would need custom dies though. Some rough bores will shoot OK. Try it before you condemn it.

i've already shot it... that's the reason for a re-barrel..18" groups at 50 yds ..and as i have a t/c in 357 herrett with a great 200 gr load, 100+ loaded rounds, 100+ fireformed cases, rcbs dies, i thought why not??? go big or go home ........ Guess it would be no trick to chamber a single shot for the Herrett but a ruined 30 WCF tube would have to be set back something like an inch before reboring and rerifling. Then a fella would have to shorten the magazine tube and dink around with relocating the barrel band (or shortening the foreend). That would make popenmann's idea for a 35/30 much more practical. If you intend to simply rebarrel then ask your leversmith if there is any risk the shorter cartridge will present any feeding problems. If the 35/30 roughly matches the 35 Remington then the smaller Herrett ought to deliver a little less juice. Might be fun to play with if money is no object, but it will be cheaper to have Fox Ridge build you a 24 inch barrel for your Contender.

Or you might consider rebarreling or relining it to some other fun cartridge which is still made and will work through the action with no problems...like the .25-35. The little .25-35 is a grand cartridge to teach the kids, grandkids, neices or nephews with, is a great little all-round woods-loafer's plinker, and believe it or not, pure death on white-tailed and black-tailed deer with factory equivalent 117 gr. bullets.. My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.
