I worked up some loads with IMR 4198 and speer 400 grain bullets. This is in my marlin cowboy rifle.

42-----1716
43-----1726
44-----1775
45-----1830
46-----1858
47-----1894
48-----1929
49-----1949
50-----2016

I plan on checking 48 grains to 50 grains again this spring in 50* weather. I think they will be just fine. It was 20*F outside today.

I also shot 600 barnes originals in it

28 grains of IMR4198 went 939 fps
30 grains went 1122 fps

What case and primer were you using and is that a 24 or 26" bbl? I have the older issue 1895 from the '70s and have Kodiak 400 and Swift A-Frame 400 gr. bullets to load, I am planning on H-4198, so, your results are very helpful, thanks!

50 grains at 2000fps ? Any idea of the pressures ?? The 350 gr PMC load is 37,000 or 38,000 at 2100.

No I do not know the pressures. The highest load I could find was 53 grains of IMR 4198 for a 400 grain bullet. (steves pages)

I just want 2000 fps and believe I found that without reaching max pressure. (thanks to the 26" barrel).

I also wanted to use IMR 4198 because it pushes 350 barnes X's at 2540 fps in my 22" 458 win.

Hodgdon # 27 shows the same conponents except 50.5 grs. H-4198 giving just over 2000 fps. in a 22" bbl. so this looks pretty sound to me.

Thanks bud, I had figured that out and my results over the past 18 months tend to support your statement; the corroboration is always welcome. Do you find these to be good Elk bullets, especially on raking shots in thick stuff?

Kutenay-I can only say they would be.This year I used the 300 Barnes XFN on my Elk and it went down like a head shot with a slight angle behind the front left quarter and out just in front of the right front. It was one of those I'm using the 45-70 period for Elk.I usually use my .300 Win Mag because of the unpredictable distances and a couple times this year I thought I had made a bad mistake in using the 45-70 only.Had to pass on a couple larger bulls at distances my un-scoped 45-70 wouldn't do but the .300 would have with ease.

I think the 405 Kodiak is one of the best bullets for the 45-70/450 Marlin and I would choose it every time in Bear country but the Barnes is one tough bullet also.Long but tough.

Good luck..........Jayco.
