I received a older well used Marlin 45-70 octagon barrel LTD. The barrel is only 18-1/2 " long. How much recoil will this be? Can it produce groups very well at 50 yards? Are cowboy action loads worth a look for shooting out of this one? Thanks

Recoil will depend on what load you shoot in it. Remington green box 405's have about zero recoil. The factory 300 grains at 1800 have just a bit. You can get some 'thumper' loads out of that marlin, use what you are comfortable with. You do know the limited, Cowboy shortie will bring big $$ if you don't beat it up. Mines unfired.

Thanks buckeyeshooter. I found out my 1895 ltd III .45-70 blued, ballard rifling 18.5" full octagon barrel with straight grip in walnut stocks were a special run by marlin for davidsons in 1998. This was made by the original Marlin Co. Not sure what it's worth but they only made a 1000 of them. Mine is 90 to 95%

Current selling price between $1200 and $1500. There were a series of limited guns, each variation 1000 units. Limited I,II,III, IV and V if I remember correctly.
