Does anyone know where I can find Silvertips as a component? I found a box of factory loads about 2 years ago, but haven't found anything since.

Small Fry:

If you are talking of your Ruger Number One in 30/30, have you considered loading it with 150 or 165 grain Fail Safes?

That would be a fun deer hunting rig with that combo.

I have been day dreaming about a Ruger Number One with a heavy sporter barrel in stainless with a grey laminate stock and Maybe a 26 inch barrel in 30/30, ever since you told me that you were making a Number One in 30/30.

Cheers and Good Shooting.

Winchester quit selling Silvertips as a component quite a few years ago. Last time I found any was back around 1975, give or take a year. Got them in Reno Nevada. Apparently, all you can find now are the Powerpoints in bulk, and all I have seen have been in the 150 gr. weight. Naturally, I want the 170 gr.
I know of people who would like to get Winchester's 190 gr. Silvertip for use in the 30-30, but Winchester has never sold that bullet as a component, selling it only in loaded ammo for the .303 Savage. Even noted gunwriter Sam Fadala had to buy .303 Savage ammo and pull the bullets for use in his 30-30. I got around that problem by using a 190 gr. cast bullet at 1950 FPS. Really makes the old 30-30 a real thumper on larger deer.
I don't have a clue why Winchester is so selective about which components they sell. You can buy loaded 7x57 ammo, but I haven't seen just brass for sale in some time.
maybe somebody ought to kick their beancounters real hard in the arse and maybe wake them up.

Midway had the 170 gr. Silvertips about 2-4 years ago. I've still got some. But you're right, they're no longer available. I've got some of the 190s for the .303 Savage but they aren't Silvertips. Apparently, Winchester did, at least once, let some go as components. These 40 or so that I have are all that I've seen but I'm on the lookout for more.
