Has anyone shot one of the new production Winchester 1895 takedowns, especially the 405?

I have 9 of them in various configurations, High Gtade, Standard, Case-hardened, take-down, etc... All shoot great. I love this gun and the caliber. It worked for Theodore Roosevelt on his Safari to Africa and he found it to be "Big Medicine" on Lion.

I highly recommend.

I have a new production 1895 in .30-06. I had the barrel cut down to 20" and changed the sights to a Williams receiver / Williams shorty front ramp w/ bead. It is quite accurate, considering iron sights.

The new production take-down has a slack adjustment provision that allows tightening the barrel to the action over time to handle thread wear. Unless you assemble/disassemble it thousands of times, this should take care of concerns about the take-down getting loose.

I must report that I have shot an 1895 TD in 405 with both Hornady factory loads and reloads with the 300gr Hornady and the 300gr North Fork bullets.

The rifle shoots very good, I have no complaints.

One of the nicer things about the Model 1895 takedown is that we don't have to get all worked up over the TuffPak issue!

Bill I must say I have used the Tuffpaks on 3 trips to Zimbabwe, one trip to Canada, and a couple of trips to Los Angeles.

I like them.

On my last trip to Zim my wife and I used 2 full sized Tuffpaks and one takedown Tuffpak.

Those takedown Tuffpaks are really neat. Cool Big Grin

Let me add that I have also used the Tuffpaks in my vehicle while traveling many times. I have a large cable thet I use to secure the Tuffpak to the inside of my vehicle.

Also in Africa and Canada I used a cable to secure the Tuffpaks to something inside my room.

dmazur, how about shedding some light on this slack adjustment provision...how does it work?

Thanks,
Larry
